Mail Merge list sorted by category (2000 or 2003)

Edited: <!t><!/t> and <!t><!/t> tags added around the URL to make the link live. -Mod.

Please help me. I have been trying to get this to work for days!
I'm trying to emulate the same results from the link below:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;211303

Whenever I try to copy and paste the code into word and run the merge, I get the following results:
{ IF { SEQ } = "1" "{Atlanta}" "" }
{ SET Place1 {Atlanta}}
{ If { Place2 } { Place1 }"
{Atlanta}
{GATES} {50000}" "{GATES} {50000}" }{ SET Place2 {Atlanta}}

Why won't it take it out of the code and make it like the tutorial from microsofts website?
It should look like this:
Atlanta

Smith $3,000
Gates $50,000
Henderson $10,000

Houston

Jones $8,000
Kelley $9,000
Peterson $0

I thank you very much if you are able to assist me.
Thanks,
-redsilver

In small print, the article mentions that to insert field codes you have to create the pairs of braces using Ctrl+F9. Normal braces are treated as plain text by Word.

Because it's a hassle to convert back and forth between "real" codes and the text of the codes in articles like the one you linked, I wrote a macro that does the conversion. Since I've lost track of which thread has the document, I'm attaching it again (with apologies to those who pay for the storage around here).

jscher2000,

Thanks you for responding so quickly. I downloaded your word document with the macro and it works with your example of the time.

I still can't get the information to show in this format though:

Atlanta

Smith $3,000
Gates $50,000
Henderson $10,000

Houston

Jones $8,000
Kelley $9,000
Peterson $0

I know this is probably a lot to ask, but could you try to get the same style results, and if it works, please save the document and post for me to use?

I really appreciate your help.
Thanks again,

The attached zip file contains a data document and a document with merge fields, more or less as in the Microsoft example. View field codes (Alt+F9) to see how the fields are set up.
