    Bob,
You can go into Control Panel>Folder Options>View and check "hide known file extensions".
If you mean on the desktop shortcuts, you can always rename them to whatever you want.

In addition to Viking's reply: it is NOT a good idea to hide the extension of files (shortcuts excepted). Users should always be able to see the extension of all files, this will make them more aware of what the different file types are, and may help prevent problems.

What's your advice regarding Hiding / Showing HIDDEN Files?

I do the same thing as Dave (I am assuming by "system" he means the "super hidden" operating system files). I want to see everything, except for those pesky "desktop.ini" and "thumbs.db" files...

Re: Show/Hide Filename Extension... (XP SP1)

I always display hidden files and folders. Whether every end user should see them is more debatable than with extensions, but I am in favor of it. We frequently recommend people in these forums to look up a file in the Application Data folder in their personal profile, such as custom templates for Word documents etc., and always have to remind them to display hidden files, since Application Data is hidden. As Dave and WyllyWylly remark, protected system files can remain hidden, you don't want to mess with those.

I agree with Hans regarding showing file extensions but thought you had a specific reason to hide them.
Agree with Dave and Mark about hidden files, etc. too. I want to see ALL the pieces !
