Putting log on/off & Standby shortcuts... (XP)

    Hi,

The screenshot I made shows an Admin/User Log on/off shortcut on the Start Menu.
How is this added / removed from the start menu?

Also, can I add Standby there?

    Thanks,

    BD.

How is this added / removed from the start menu?

    Start the registry editor (regedit.exe)
    Move to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionExplorerAdvanced
From the Edit menu select New - DWORD value and enter a name of StartMenuLogoff (if it does not exist)
Double click the new value and set to 1 (or to 0 to disable it)
    Close the registry editor
    Logoff and then logon

Also, can I add Standby there?
Unfortunately, I don't know... Maybe not.

If you right-click the Start button, choose Properties (and, if needed, the Start Menu tab), Click Classic Start menu and then the Customize... button, you can choose the Logoff item there.

I never use Standby, but I do use Hibernate, which I access by folding closed the top half of the computer. If you are using a desktop computer, I guess that won't work for you. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

In the matter of fact, you do not use Hibernate mode, but Sleep mode instead. The difference is that Sleep mode is BIOS-based and do not saving your memory onto the hard drive. Because of it, it's seeping power from the battery, and if you by accident disconnect the battery (or it will be fully discharged), you will loose all your open windows and documents you didn't save. On the other hand, Hibernate mode is Windows-based (you can reach it from Shutdown menu) and it writes the memory onto the hard drive. Going to and from Hibernate mode takes longer than to and from Sleep mode, but in Hibernate mode your notebook doesn't use any power: you can remove battery, even remove the hard drive, and after restarting you still can continue to work with open document... By the way, Hibernate mode you can access on desktops also pressing Windows key (Ctrl-Esc) on the keyboard, then Up Arrow key, then Enter, then Shift-H and Enter once again - or using the mouse instead.

Is Windows lying to me, or does it do what I tell it to do?

I have the same options as Jefferson on my Dell 8600. Hibernate is a choice on all three options under Power Buttons.
