    Clipboard problem (OE 6.00.2720.3000)

I'm trying to help a friend troubleshoot a problem and asked him to take a snapshot of the screen using the Print Screen function, paste the data to the message area of Outlook Express and e-mail me the results. He reported back that he followed my instructions to the "T" and could not paste the snapshot into OE.

I then tried a like process within my own environment, using the same instructions and was not able to paste the snapshot. I verified that the format of OE was in Rich Text(HTML) and that I could insert a snapshot using SnagIt v7.1 but could not use the clipboard method to add the snapshot. It would appear that OE and Clipboard cannot talk to each other.

Research here at the Lounge provided some 1.5 year old data about using MS Paint as an intermediate step. Google research did not provide any help... neither did the KB at Microsoft, at least with the keywords I used.

So, the questions become... why can't one use Print Screen and copy the clipboard item directly to OE? Is the only alternative to use MS Paint (other than buying a screen snapshot app)? I have to bear in mind that my friend is long retired and short on funds. I would rather get a solution to the clipboard issue in lieu of asking him to add another app (freeware or shareware) to his environment.

His environment: WinXP-Home and OE v6.00.2720.3000

My environment: WinXP-Pro with MSO2003 but testing OE 6.00.2800.1123.

    Cheers, Bob

Your OE-Clipboard image issue also arises with WinXP Pro. Text CAN be successfully pasted into OE. The image issue may be some form of security setting from Microsoft.

Windows generally installs MS Paint by default. Have your friend look under Start|All Programs|Accessories (if (s)he is using the new interface). Alternatively, it is accessible from Control Panel|Add or Remove Programs|Add/Remove Windows Components|Accessories and Utilities|Accessories.

I'm sure MS has improved its software over time, but my recollection from pasting into Outlook is that the message bloat caused by direct pasting is enormous, and that you can get a much more compact image by pasting into Paint and saving in a compressed format. Whether PNG, GIF, or JPG is best depends on the type of image. PNG and GIF are best with large areas of flat color (such as dialogs), while JPG is best for highly variable colors (like photos). GIF only supports 256 colors, so it's not so good for accurate documentation but for quick troubleshooting, it should be fine. It's difficult to explain the extra step, but for dial-up users, it might be worth it. (High bandwidth, who cares, right? <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15> )

    Hi unkamunka,

Thanks for the input. Since Outlook itself can accommodate copying images from the clipboard to the text area, I was hoping that Outlook Express would do likewise. Alas, that is not to be and I guess that MS Paint will have to do. I did find a reference to Gadwin's PrintScreen freebie on the Lounge and have tested it in my environment. I will leave the selection up to my friend as to whether he goes with MS Paint or wants to live dangerously with freeware. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Thanks again... Cheers, Bob

    Hi Jefferson,

Thanks for the input. I totally agree about the possible message bloat. I'll do a couple of tests by mailing to some secondary accounts to see just what kind of bloat is created by a full screen shot using Paint Screen. I normally use SnagIt and like all of its rich features. I use SnagIt extensively to create user manuals and find that the $$$ I spent many years ago is well worth it... even with the upgrade costs over the years. However, I suspect the cost of SnagIt for my friend is just a bit high for what would be limited use for him.

Thanks again for your observations... Cheers, Bob

Had not your previous post ruled out freeware, I would have also recommended Gadwin's PrintScreen. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

I've had good results with Screen Hunter 4.0 Free.

    Re: Clipboard problem (OE 6.00.2720.3000)

    Hi unkamunka,

I was determined to find a solution within the environment, thus my initial comments. I found it hard to believe that OE would not have some basics like full support of the clipboard processes as found in its older and more feature laden sibling.

However, like anything else, there is always a "better-way" and so I thought I would give my friend some options. I linked up with Gadwin's PrintScreen based on a posting in the Lounge circa November 2002. I noticed that DenGar has also recommended a like product. I'll try that as well.

Thanks Dave... at first blush, PrintKey 2000 looks good.

Decisions, decisions... glad I don't have to make one, unless of course one of those freebies outperforms SnagIt!!! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
