    My Own Web Site

Where can I find a good book or web site for the "Super beginner" using a Linux server hosted by a 3rd party? All of the books I have seen assume that you have the server in your hands.
    For example:
How does one get to the "Command prompt on their shared server to do the different Root commands.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

This gets tricky. first, if you're on a shared box, you usually cannot get root access. If they did you root access, you could get to others stuff. Most shared boxes don't even allow ssh or telnet. If they do, you can access your wesite and cgi directory. You can do user commands to your stuff. ie chmod, chown, ls, del mkdir, etc. If you want to really play with linux, you either need to get a dedicated server from somewhere which runs from $49 and up per month or, build yur own. They don't need the resources windoze needs especially if its a server without a gui. (most servers don't have x-windows)

Depending on the distro, there are plenty of howto's and INSTALL files to guide you. I, personall y, like Redhat and Gentoo. I wouldn't suggest Gentoo for a newbie. I'd get an old PII or PIII and d/l and install Redhat 8 or 9. The install is cake and administration is pretty similar to other distros. Plus, I run Redhat 7.0 to 8.0 on all my servers. The lounge is 8.0, so you have a resource right here <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23>

Lemme know if you're gonna venture to the dark side...

At this time I will not be moving to the "dark side", unless I run into a used box that is going to be thrown away.

    Thanks for the input.

I imagine you've already attempted to search out the info on the host's own website / support site ?

Reading through the different Photo Albums software the all say to go to root and do a
"CHMOD the folders albums and include to 755 (or 777, depending on your server config)"

Ahhh, you don't need to go to <big>ROOT</big> - just the root directory where you installed the photo gallery script. The script needs permission to write into the directories where you have uploaded the pictures. You can do a CHMOD through nearly any FTP client.

Thanks Mark, I need to get more into the FTP bit. I use WS_FTP Pro, and all I ever did was upload the files.
