    File Associations (XP Pro)

I'm running Win XP Pro on a network. I have Acrobat 6 Pro installed and installed ScanSoft OmniPage Pro 14 after that. All my former Acrobat .PDF files took on the OmniPage icon and associations in Windows Explorer. In Explorer I was able to change the .PDF file associations back to Acrobat 6, so when double-clicked they bring up Acrobat. But the .PDF files still show the OmniPage icon.

How to I get the Acrobat icon to show on all .PDF files in Windows Explorer? If this is a registry hack, I'll need to have my IT person do it since I do not have administrative rights.

    Hi, Bob ~

    Go to:

Cocuments and SettingsBob in SeattleLocal SettingsApplication Data

    and delete 'IconCache.db'.

Reboot and it will be recreated automatically by Windows.

    Hi Bruce,

Thanks for the reply but I'm afraid deleting iconcache.db and then rebooting did not change the behavior of .PDF files having the OmniPage Pro icon.

    Anyone have any other ideas?

    Hi, Bob ~

    Sorry that did not work. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

Then try this:<UL><LI>Windows Explorer > 'Tools' > 'Folder Options...'<LI>'File Types' tab > 'PDF' under 'Extensions'<LI>'Advanced' button > 'Change Icon...' button<LI>Enter in the 'Look for icons in this file:' field:

    C:WINDOWSInstaller{AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-000000000001}PDFFile.ico

    <LI>'OK' > 'OK' > 'Apply' > 'Close' > Reboot[/list]

    Re: File Associations (XP Pro)

    Hi Bruce,

Well, that didn't quite work either, unfortunately. I was okay up until the Advanced button. There wasn't any. But there was a New button which I clicked and then a Create New Extension dialog box opened. I entered the file extension PDF and then clicked an Advanced button. I was given a list of Associated File Types. I tried the one called Adobe PDF and okayed out. It changed the icon, but to an older, smaller version of the PDF icon, not the new, larger version 6 icon. I wish I had the new larger icon, but I didn't get a Change Icon button anywhere along the line, nor did I get the opportunity to enter a location for the PDFFile.ico. Thanks anyway for your posts.

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for the visual clues. I had to revert to my previous default settings to get those same prompts. After I discovered that, then I finally got the proper Advanced button, and was able to follow Bruce's instructions and change the icon to the right Acrobat one.

Thanks to you both for your help!
