    Set up a shortcut for Paste Special ? (Word 2000)

    How can I set up an icon on one of the toolbars for Edit....Paste Special....Unformatted Text ? I do a lot of pasting of information from the Internet, but I don't want all the graphics, hyperlinks and special formating. So I find myself clicking on Edit / Paste Special / Unformatted Text very often. Can I set up a shortcut key or, even better, an icon on the toolbar to perform this operation on demand.? I'm using Word 2000 under Windows 2000. TIA

    Hello,

    Go to Tools -> Macro -> Macros. Where it says "Macro name", type "PasteAsPlainText", and press "Create". The Visual Basic Editor will launch, and you'll see something like this:

    <pre>Sub PasteAsPlainText()
    '
    ' PasteAsPlainText Macro
    ' Macro created 6/20/2004 by MarkGuy12

    End Sub
    </pre>

    Put your cursor just above the "End Sub" line (on the blank line without the apostrophe) and type in the following:
    <pre>Selection.PasteAndFormat (wdFormatPlainText)
    </pre>

    Go to File -> Save, then File-> Close and Return to Microsoft Word.

    Now go to Tools -> Customize, and select the "Commands" tab. Scroll down and select "Macros" in the left column. In the right column, select your new "PasteAsPlainText" macro, and drag it to one of the toolbars. You can right-click your new toolbar button and change the text or icon that's displayed.

    HTH!

    Andrew,
    Thanks!! Just read your response and it seems straightforward. Will give it a try after I finish some other work. It never fails to amaze me how much you can get out of Word - today I just created a new style by typing a name in the style dropdown box and was able to apply the font, position, etc. right away!!

    Re: Set up a shortcut for Paste Special ? (Word 2000)

    Andrew,
    Oops! It didn't work! There is no PasteAndFormat function available. Is this an Office XP or 2003 function? I'm using Word 2000.
    The only Paste with an A following that shows up in Autocomplete is PasteAsNestedTable. I tried using PasteSpecial but that defaults to the HTML format as the default, which is just what I DON'T want.
    Any thoughts as to how to proceed?

    See the thread starting at Post 355582 for alternative example code

    Also see <post#=102586>post 102586</post#> for instructions on how to attach this macro to a right click menu.

    Ah, Sorry about that, try this instead:

    <pre>Selection.PasteSpecial link:=False, _
    placement:=wdInLine, _
    datatype:=wdPasteText, _
    DisplayAsIcon:=False
    </pre>

    Or see <post#=291457>post 291457</post#>. I assume they all work pretty much the same way.
