How much conflict am I asking for?

Not sure which forum I should be asking this in so I will start here. Are there any problems with having three different browsers installed - IE, Mozilla Firefox and then Netscape? I wanted to load Netscape to be able to check out web pages that I create to see if they work okay with each browser. If these three are okay, should I consider any other browser to use for proofing my pages?

I'm not aware of any problems with installing Netscape in addition to IE and Mozilla Firefox, which I think you already have on-board. I've done so on a number of machines (base Mozilla, not Firefox) without difficulty. The only thing I would do as a precaution is to make a duplicate copy of your current Mozilla profile, just in case. The reason I say that is that sometimes, not always, when you install Netscape it will ask if you want to run or install a profile that it finds on your drive. I would tell it NO if you get that chance. Then create a new profile for the version of Netscape you install. I don't know what version of NS you're planning to install, but I don't think I would bother with any version prior to 7.x as 6.x is frought with problems and 4.x users are in the big minority these days. Personally, I think you're going above and beyond the call of duty by checking your pages against all three browsers! Good fer you.

I'll second Al, no problems with your setup. If you feel so inclined, you could also install Opera to test pages in. Opera, Mozilla and Internet Explorer are the three dominant platforms for web browsing. Netscape 6 is the same thing as Mozilla, just with a different front end - thanks to AOL. In terms of how the pages render it should look identical to Mozilla.

I also wanted to say "Thank you" for being so thorough. One of my pet peeves about web development is the fact that some designers never test outside of Internet Explorer or on other platforms to see how their stuff looks. I'm glad you took the initiative!!

Hi Al and Mark!

I have to say that my webpage abilities are simple yet but as time goes on, I hope to improve in style and ability. One of my goals is to see that the pages do work correctly on different browsers.

Netscape 7.1, my favorite Mozilla Firefox .9, IE6 and Opera 7.51 now reside on my hard drive and seem to be functioning quite well. It took a bit of time (dial-up ya know!) but after lots of waiting, success is mine!!

Thanks to you both for giving me the 'go ahead'!!

Just an extra FYI, there is a product by Microsoft called Virtual PC. It allows you to create 'virtual' hard drives and operating systems on your existing PC. The virtual hard drives are literally files on your computer. Want to make a backup, just copy the file somewhere else. Install whatever you want within the 'virtual' operating system, and if things go wrong, just delete the file/harddrive. Very handy for creating 'test' environments.

Drew

In your sentence:
"There is a product by Microsoft"
it would have been more accurate if it had read:
"There is a product bought by Microsoft"
...!
