Marking Mail as Read (XP SP3)

Since changing from OL 2000 to OL XP, when I use the spacebar to read through messages in the preview pane, outlook is not marking the messages as read, as it finishes one message and moves to the next message, which it used to do in OL 2k.

I don't want messages marked as read unless I've scrolled right through them - so the "mark as read when selection changes" doesn't work to my liking, nor does marking messages read after a set time.
What do I have to do to ge OLXP to behave the way I like it, as 2K used to do??

    David.
So far as I know the behaviour you describe is "as designed".

Have you tried removing ALL checkmarks except for the botton one, for use of space bar?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Yup,
That's exactly how I've had OL configured for the past 6 years or so - which is how I like it. If I use the space bar to READ the message, it's considered READ. Seems logical to me, but doesn't work for me in XP.
    sigh.
