    'Dirty' W98SE install

Someone told me that Windows 98SE can now be installed over itself with no harm done.
Has anyone heard of this? Can it be true?
I don't have a current "disaster", but if this is true, it would simplify my life in the future.

You can do this but a clean install is usually the better option. This method may not eliminate problems with the O/S.

It is worth checking out www.windowsreinstall.com, and in particular ways of reinstalling windows

I have managed to do this before and the process went quite smoothly. Nothing got "nuked" in the way of programs and their settings, and I did end up with with a smoother O/S. That said, I also ended up with a few bugs that I'd previously ironed out (with older .dlls etc. reinstalled). I'd say your mileage might vary, depending on what you're wanting to achieve. And I'd concur with others that nothing beats the full monty, clean install. Also consider the option of running SFC after the install, as a record of the state in which things started off.

Far as I know it always could be installed "over itself".

If by "harm done" you mean restore alot of the old .dll's (like Alan said) and factory settings, then the answer is "Yes, it will do some harm.". But it can also save you a lot of time and fix many "basic" problems.

    As other's have said.... nothing beats a clean install !! My <img src=/S/2cents.gif border=0 alt=2cents width=15 height=15>
