    Serial cable length

I was just curious if anyone has ever made or knows what the max. distance for a serial cable is. I have a pc that I need to move, but I can not move the patch panel that it plugs into. I need to run 2 serial cables about 85 feet. Thanks in advance for any help.

See if this helps (or hurts!).

    Re: Serial cable length

You may have to get the serial cables made up for you, and take advice on the practicality of what you're trying to do from a firm which does this for a living . I've only used up to about 30 feet lengths, many, many, years ago!

When you say "patch panel", does that imply additional onward serial cable length? If so, you may be pushing the bounds of RS232, and entering into the dreaded realms of inconsistent results...

A quick Google for "serial extender" shows that you can get boosters to get serial communication working at distances of up to 10Km - for examples, see greatcables.com and minicom.com.

    Re: Serial cable length

From what I have read thanks to everyone here I think we can do what we need to do....as far as the patch panel goes it does not continue with more serial cables, it ties into a slc500 in which opens doors at our prison facility. The serial cable is just so the computer can track which doors open and at what time. Thanks again to everyone for your response.

This is a bit late, but I have a couple of runs over 100 feet and have few problems. I am sure the problems we had have been hand-shaking and not the cable as over the last 9 years we would have had fewer than 10 failures.

That is good to hear. Did you run your cable in conduit to stop from any electrical crosstalk or is it exposed? and thank you for your response.

I would advise trying to configure this so that it is all within the specification, including booster hardware as necessary.

If a long cable appears to work properly then you can run into problems when you have to replace hardware. Although vendors have traditionally made RS232 chips that can work with cables that are longer than the spec, they can change any time it makes financial sense. If you are dependent on the hardware being able to drive long cables this could lead to problems.

From memory, it was run through conduit. The contractor also made a point of avoid electrical cable by a reasonable margin (I don't recall the distance just that it was discussed at length). HTH

Considering the application, I would say that was excellent advice!

And if it doesn't work, you'll be able to tell from the sound of the sirens!
