Circular Reference causes loss of data/table (Excel 2003/XP)

In subtotalling a range of data, I received a Circular Reference dialog box and clicked OK to find the location.
The table of data disappeared and I cannot recover or unhide the data. Backup file is unlocatable. Why did they
    ever remove Autosave?

If they are "hidden" with the subtotal, have you tried:
clicking the "+" on the left side of the worksheet to "open" the dataset

    Or just use:
Data - subtotals - remove all

    To remove the subtotals

Thank you; however, the subtotal never completed and the #2 subtotal did not have any data to "unhide". I also already
tried removing subtotals and it doesn't recognize any data range. It's just poofed!

Are the rows "hidden" or is the data gone completely?

My Autosafe would have enabled you to recover your last copy from the recycle bin...
Switch off autorecover when you're going to use it though.

Autosave is in Excel 2003 (and XP) under Tools | Options | Save. The option to always save a backup copy of a Workbook is now under File | Save As | Tools | General Options. And there's Jan Karels' superior Autosafe.

The data seems to be gone completely. I tried UNHIDE. I also tried to locate a temporary backup and no file
is being backed up under the Tools, Options, Save even though there is a path designated. The file I see
in that path is only 11 KB ending in .xlb and it doesn't open.
