    Wrong Format ? (Office 97)

    Hi

If I use the formula below in some worksheets where there is no data in D2 or E2 I get Insufficient Data but on others I get 0.00 can you help please?

    =IF((ISERROR(D2*E2))," Insufficient Data",(D2*E2))

Your formula will return if D2*E2 results in an error, for example if D2 and/or E2 contains a text value, which might be an empty text value. But if D2 is cleared, it won't cause an error in a multiplication, but count as 0.

If you want to return "Insufficient Data" if D2 or E2 is blank, use this extended formula:

    =IF((OR(ISBLANK(D2),ISBLANK(E2),ISERROR(D2*E2)))," Insufficient Data",(D2*E2))

Are you sure that they are blank? If there is text in either 1 or a formula which results in the null string, the multiplication will give an error which results in your message.

    Hi Steve

You are correct although nothing appeared to be in there, something must have been I deleted all the rows and now it's working.

    Thanks for your prompt reply.

Some people "clear" cells by adding a "space" or a single quote ('). Both will appear empty, but are text and will yield an error with math operations.
