    Word character problem (Word 2000)

I manage an office of about 30 users. All machines (XP) are kept patched and I run updated antivirus. One users machine is having avery strange problem. Any document she opens or any document email to her, or that she creates new has all the characters stacked on top of each other. Each line is separate but all the characters are stacked on top of each other on the left side of the screen.

I hit CTRL +A and then pasted the contents to wordpad, and it successfully pastes the text there. I do not see anything added to normal.dot.

That is extremely strange. This is much stranger than what happens if Word's "Recover Text from Any File (*.*)" was entered in the "Files of Type" space in the File>Open dialog. (It's a sticky setting, so it's easy to forget.) I wonder whether there is any other kind of file filter that could lead to the strange results you're setting? Can you check and make sure the Files of Type is set to something like All Word Documents?

Does it make any difference which View is selected (Normal, Print Layout, Web Layout, etc.)?

Maybe try an online virus scan with HouseCall to get a second opinion if you don't already use Trend Micro antivirus software.

Added: One other thought: Word tries to adapt the text display to the active printer. Try changing the printer and see if that makes any difference (File>Print>change printer>Cancel).

I've had this problem as well and though it's been a while I seem to recall that it was a print driver issue. <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29> Might want to update your drivers if you haven't already.

If the other suggestions don't fix your strange problem, perhaps investigating the languages set on that machine is worth a try - perhaps a language pack is trying to organise the text vertically.

It sounds like it is related to the user's normal.dot template. What happens if you remove that template?

The printer driver would be my first suspect, too. Perhaps also look into "Format > Font > Character spacing" for a heavily compressed spacing (though this could only account for the problem if "Tools > Templates and Add-Ins > Automatically update document styles" is checked, too).
