    Re: Lines Between Emails (2003)

    Rob, some of the settings you want to change are controlled by the overall Settings | Control Panel | View. You may be able to get a more acceptable appearance by changing the Outlook settings under View | Arrange By | Custom | Other Settings. See the thread starting with <post#=332078>post 332078</post#>.

    And, Rob, please shrink your attachment so it doesn't stretch the Lounge display as much.

    Lines Between Emails (2003)

    <P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by Leif on 25-Jun-04 16:12. to reduce attached image size.)</P>Take a look at screen shot attached- what setting in the display settings, controls the color of the LINES in between the individual emails? I want to change it back to the very light gray - the dark lines are driving me INSANE!

    Those are called Grid lines. Here's how you can color or remove them in Outlook 2002. I presume that 2003 is similar.

    Re: Lines Between Emails (2003)

    Thanks for the first reply. In the settings of course there is no where to change the color of gridlines in 2003 - which indicates to me that they are keyed into some color the system is retaining from elsewhere...bizarre...

    At least I have them turned off, thereby returning Outlook to its pre-2003 state, just like I like it.

    The grid line color option is no longer in that dialog in 2003, I haven't found it anywhere in 2003. It's so annoying when MS takes away an option.

    Well, three hours later... Hopefully I evaporated my afternoon for a good cause. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    In Outlook 2002, the details of the View settings are accessible as an XML string. With a little help from MSDN, I was able to construct a dialog that displays the 20 different view color options (as accurately as I could determine their RGB values using the eyedropper in Photoshop Elements) and lets you assign any of them to the current view. Note that if grid lines are not turned on, you won't see any difference. This is more of a test than a comprehensive solution. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> Anyway, the code is attached and can be imported directly into the Outlook VBE (File>Import) in two steps, one import for the form, another for the bas file that calls the form.

    Oops, I forgot to build out the second tab. Here's version 0.2 for those inclined to play. It's my first try using Scroll Bars instead of Spin Buttons. I Like It!

    Re: Lines Between Emails (2003)

    OK, first thing, I don't know what I'm doing. Jefferson, your code runs without error but doesn't change the line color in Outlook 2003. Here's the first few lines from the view dump of my inbox window:

    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <view type="table">
    <viewname>Messages</viewname>
    <viewstyle>table-layout:fixed;width:100%;font-family:Tahoma;font-style:normal;font-weight:normal;font-size:8pt;color:Black;font-charset:0</viewstyle>
    <viewtime>212215227</viewtime>
    <linecolor>8388736</linecolor>
    <linestyle>3</linestyle>

    I assumed the second-to-last line of XML posted should be the line to change. I messed about with the code without success. What do I need to change this line of form code to, or am I off base completely?

    Set xmlNode = xmlDoc.selectSingleNode("view/linecolor")

    Re: Lines Between Emails (2003)

    John, thank you for testing this. From what I see, the XML is virtually identical to Outlook 2002 --

    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <view type="table">
    <viewname>Messages</viewname>
    <viewstyle>table-layout:fixed;width:100%;font-family:Tahoma;font-style:normal;font-weight:normal;font-size:8pt;color:Black</viewstyle>
    <viewtime>212212747</viewtime>
    <linecolor>12632256</linecolor>
    <linestyle>3</linestyle>
    <gridlines>1</gridlines>

    -- so I don't understand why it doesn't work. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    Re: Lines Between Emails (2003)

    To confuse me further, when I run your code, the value of linecolor in the View XML dump is changing ... but the displayed color ain't!

    Before:
    <view type="table">
    yada, yada
    <linecolor>16711680</linecolor>

    After running your code and changing the color:
    <view type="table">
    yada, yada
    <linecolor>8388736</linecolor>

    <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29> <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20> <img src=/S/confused3.gif border=0 alt=confused3 width=45 height=45>

    Is there something overriding the line color that I'm not thinking of? Or are all cats gray in the dark?

    Re: Lines Between Emails (2003)

    Could your view be locked against changes? If you open the relevant folder and display the VBE Immediate window (Ctrl+G), what do you get for this query?

    <code>
    ?activeexplorer.CurrentView.lockuserchanges</code>

    Mine returns False..... Of course, the help file suggests that this shouldn't be the problem, since you are able to save the change.
    <hr>If True, the user can modify the settings of the current view; however, changes made to the interface will not be saved. If False (the default), any changes will be saved.<hr>
    If you pop open the Object Browser (F2) to the View object, do you see anything that might be a relevant new property?

    .lockuserchanges is False. No 'aha!' Properties or Methods under the View Object in 2003. I also tried vwCurr.Apply to no avail.

    Re: Lines Between Emails (2003)

    One thing to try that might get you close would be to change the gridlines to Small Dots. Seems to kind of trick the eyes into interpreting it as light gray..at least on my laptop.

    You can do that by selecting the inbox first, then go to View and hover over Arrange By. Then choose Custom from that list. From the customize dialog click on the Other Settings button and you'll get a dialog that has a section specifically for the gridlines. I agree that it would be nice to see more options there...but maybe that's something we'll get with SP1.
