deleting temporary internet files (XP Pro (with all updates))

Hi. Got a couple of problems that you can possibly help me with, both relating to the "temporary internet files" folder (I think)

The first one is the fact that I can't get into it any more! I used to be able to open it and see what was in it (when I had Win2k). This was particularly useful, as I could delete all the versions of files that get opened from emails (I use Outlook) which are habitually stored there in a sub-folder. Windows Explorer now reports (by right clicking) that I have some 83Mb of files in there, but assorted cleaning utilities have failed to find and delete them. I've tried looking at the security settings, but that particular tab has disappeared from the properties window on that folder (it's there on all the others, though!). I use NIS 2004, but to the best of my knowledge that doesn't restrict my access to that folder.

Currently, the only way to access the folder is to open a file from an email attachment, choose "Save As" to open up in the folder where the file is (i.e. the temp internet files folder), and then delete all the files you can see - although it has the drawback that they are only of the types allowed by the application. Bizarre.

Second problem is one sticky saved "address" in IE. I went to the site by mistake looking for somewhere else [it's perfectly innocuous, honest!], and now it persists in keeping the address in the drop down box - you know, the one that appears when you start typing a web address. Assorted cleaning utilities fail to delete it (including the ones in IE), although they will delete absolutely everything else [mostly - a couple of history items always seem to get left behind in the folders, too]. It's annoying.

    Help, please. Thanks.

    Stuart

1.) What happens when you click on TIF in Windows Explorer? Nothing appears in the right pane? Any error message? What happens in IE when you go to Tools | Internet Options | General | Settings (Temporary Internet Files) | View Files?
2.) What did you try in IE?

    Joe, hi.

In Windows Explorer, clicking TIF brings up a blank right pane, as you say. Tools | .... | View Files brings up a list of files, but these are the standard files that I can see and which get removed with Tools | Internet Options | General | Delete Files.

In IE I did just that, (T | IO | G | DF) and everything that I had and could see went away, but not the other files.

    * * *

As an update, I thought about using CMD. I got to TIF, and then using a combination of DIR /ASHD (or bits of it as appropriate) and then CDing could actually see all the files. The main ones I was after deleting were in OLKDA, so I deleted them this way. For good measure I also deleted offline files (not that I should have had any through IE!), which was another hidden/system folder, and basically anything else I came across. I managed to reduce the folder from 83Mb to 29Mb, and then when I reduced the available size of the cache from 200Mb to 100Mb and also cleared out offline files (by checking the option in the T | IO | G | DF dialog) I got it down to 8Mb! Quite a difference! Needless to say, I still can't navigate down the TIF tree in Explorer...

Also, my sticky typed address is still there... (after all of the above, plus Tools | Internet Options | Content | AutoComplete | Clear Forms [and also] Clear Passwords)

Gald you got something figured out on the files?
Clear History for the typed site?

Nope - it's still there. Can't get rid of the d**n thing!

    I still want to know why I can't get inside my TIF folder, too! (Don't want much, do I? <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>)

Has your homepage changed ??? What is the address that you can't get rid of (if you want to share, of course) ???

Have you tried running Hijack This to see if you can find anything unusual or related to this address in the log ?? Don't "fix" anything with Hijack This unless you know what it is, or you can trash you system.

No, I regularly kep my homepage set to "about:blank" and I haven't changed it (although when I went to the site in question it asked if it could change it for me!). The site is

    www.showcase.co.uk

which I entered by mistake when I was looking for Showcase Cinemas (to book movie tickets - so it is all completely innocuous, as I said!!) It's just that the wretched thing won't go away! I haven't tried hijack, although I've tried a few other utilities - I'll go and have a look now...

    Cheers.

I did some checking on Google and that site looks like a gateway to trouble. I'd guess that it put a little hook in your registry somewhere. HijackThis might turn up where it is located on your system. This turorial I've linked to has complete instructions for using HijackThis and links to download it and Spybot & Ad Aware as well as links to tutorials for each of them. HTH.

    Hi, Stu ~

You will need to delete your index.dat files - then you will once again gain access to your TIF.
