moving address book (Outlook2000/Win2000pro SP4)

    hello all!

i would like to move (or copy) the address book that i saved from outlook when i had the beast (my computer) completely rebuilt and had to reinstall all of the programs (which took me a very l-o-n-g time). i really don't want to have to recreate all those entries one by one, especially since they don't just have e-mail address, but all the personal and business contact info, too. the file shows as an address book file (that's what comes up as the file type when i searched for it.), but there doesn't seem to be an extension on it; maybe i am looking in the wrong place? i tried using the help in outlook to do this, but it didn't seem to work correctly, so i am throwing myself at your collective feet, asking for . thanks for any and all help that you can give me. until then, take care and God bless.

One of the many settings you probably will want to change when you re-customize Windows is the suppression (or should I say, stopping the suppression) of registered file extensions. Try, in Windows Explorer, Tools>Folder Options>View and clear the checkbox for "Hide file extensions."

Once you can see whether it is a PAB (old Outlook format, can be imported to the Contacts folder using File>Import, or added as a service if you are in Corporate/Workgroup mode) or a WAB (I don't know anything about these), you should be able to get a bit more help.

    thanks!

... for the suggestion and information. i don't know if i understand quite what you mean by an "old Outlook format", as i am using Outlook 2000, but, since it is now 2004, and there is a newer version, i guess that "old" qualifies. i cleared the checkbox as you suggested (it would be really nice if microsoft would allow us to choose how we want what we want, instead of assuming that they know best. wishful thinking, eh?), and looked at the file again. it's a WAB type of file. now that this has been clarified, can anyone help me, please? to one and all, thanks for looking and for any help that you choose to send my way. until the next time, take care and God bless.

i know that it has taken me quite some time to find out what type of address book file i have; i humbly beg your forgiveness. life has been most interesting around here for the last three months . yeah, i know... that's no excuse! as i learned to say when i was in boot camp... no excuse, sir.

i found out that my address books are of the .WAB type. i have them saved as individual files in my personal file folder on the hard drive. as i asked before, how do i get the address books, or the info in them, into the address book in my current edition/version of outlook?

, as usual, for any help that you can point my way. i eagerly await the pearls of wisdom that come from all the wonderful people here. i can only hope that, someday, i will be as knowledgeable as all y'all and that i will be able to help someone in return. until that time, take care and God bless.

Re: moving address book (Outlook2000/Win2000pro SP

If you use Outlook's File>Import and Export..., Import Internet Mail and Addresses, it will try to bring your Outlook Express address book into your Contacts folder. You might or might not want it there. Actually, I'm not sure a WAB is an OE address book, but it seems to be the closest match in a quick check.

Note: sometimes the Import and Export stuff isn't installed by a typical install of Office, so you might need to dig out your CD before you can use it. Outlook will let you know if that is necessary.
