How to prevent annoying advertising windows?

I may well be onto a loser here, but anyway. Some web sites seem to produce an annoying, additional, usually smaller, window other than the one you are looking at. Since these are almost always advertising and unwanted, is there any way to prevent their appearance?

There is some software here at freeware-search.com called Popup Stopper.
Sounds like it's free and ought to do the job - but I have never used it.

...and just beneath it in my Google search window, I also spotted this one:

That's because I don't read your posts properly!
I read it as stop popup, rather than prevent - just entering stop popup into Google delivered the goods.

The very best fix I know is free (for individual home use) from http://www.webwasher.com I've run it for over 2 years and about 4 million copies are in use. When working through the pages at this site, click also on 'fun stuff' to get to a superb discussion area with a list of FAQ items that will tell you everything you need to know. The software comes from the subsidiary of a major corporation, and the company's real focus is on sales of the software to big companies protecting large numbers of PC, Mac and Linux desktops. WebWasher has won serious awards.

There is also POW! From analogx, it's pretty good if you frequent a site which puts up one particular window all the time, but you may want to see other windows. It can be had at www.analogx.com
