    Multiple Problems (XP Home)

I'm trying to help a neighbor lady with her computer problems. These first showed up after she ran McAfee's QuickClean program. Ever since that time her IE 6.0 browser won't show images (i.e. she gets the infamous red x's). In addition, when I send her emails she gets the header stuff, but nothing in the text area, and she cannot send emails at all. I've tried various suggestions regarding correcting registry entries for gif's and jpg's, but there was nothing wrong with these entires. Also made sure that the IE options were set to display pictures, etc. Nothing helps!

I installed all the latest windows updates. Installed and ran Adaware. She still has the problem. Today I installed and ran SpyBot which found 17 problems, but when it attempted to fix the problems I got a series of error messages indicating that SpyBot was denied access to several dll's such as isrt.dll, wtkernel0100.dll, wdengine.dll, etc.

Any suggestions as to how to attack this problem?

My immediate question is whether you ran Spybot in an Administrator Account or in a Limited Account?

I suspect that only the former would allow you to "mess with DLLs", even though I have no idea why it would be objecting to the DLLs you mention...

PS It may be worth running Merijn's CWShredder, because it often is!

I believe it must be the administrator account as this is a single user installation and it doesn't open with any logon accounts.

It's not that Spy Bot is objecting to the dll's, it is finding that access to the dll's has been denied for some reason. I'm just guessing, but I think that somehow the dll's have either been deleted or more likely changed into a different location.

I'll try the Schredder program next.

    Hi Chuck,

It appears that your friend's computer is infected with the WildTangent virus. I think that an AV devinition update is in order. Followed by a complete system scan. Then DL and run CWShredder as John suggested. If that doesn't find and help you fix the problems, post back and we can explore other alternatives to this malware problem.

    Re: Multiple Problems (XP Home)

I uninstalled AOL's AIM then followed Doc's suggestion. Ran complete virus scan while in safe mode -- no virus' found. Ran complete scans with AdAware and SpyBot. SpyBot found one problem which it fixed. I then ran CWShredder -- it found no problems. However, the problem of IE 6.0 not displaying images is still there !! I've just about run out of options. The lady doesn't want to do a complete HD reformat and install because she has some older programs that she no longer has disks for. Also, (and unfortunately), she has an HP Presario and therefore didn't get an XP CD with the system because HP provides a copy on a "hidden" part of the HD. That's about the most stupid idea I've heard of. If the HD goes down you have no way to load the OS.

Anyway, any further suggestions are most welcome.

    Re: Multiple Problems (XP Home)

Have you updated the Ad Aware & Spybot programs before you ran the scan ?? Reason I ask is that WildTangent is associated with one of those .dlls you posted and is a game company whose software calls home. It is also reported to be installed by the AIM installer or when you run some of the games on AIM.

I'd first try to update and run Spybot and Ad Aware again, as they should detect and remove this malware. If not I might have one more trick up my sleeve for this. Let us know how you make out.

    Re: Multiple Problems (XP Home)

I installed both Adaware and SpyBot and downloaded the latest definition files on both. SpyBot caught and deleted one piece of spyware, but that didn't cure the no picture problem.

I'm becoming suspicious that something in the registry is fouled up. All of these problems occurred after my friend ran McAfee's QuickClean which, I assume, attempts to clean up (and out) registry entries. Perhaps it changed some.

I searched the internet for the "no picture" problem and came up with one suggestion for changing the CodePage setting in the registry to something like C_28591.NLS (whatever that means). Perhaps I'll try that. Then again, maybe not. I looked at that entry in my own registry and it had "REG-SZ"n not some funny number like the above.

I subsequently changed the code page as recommended -- no help! I'm now totally out of options.

Chuck, It may be something you've already done but it wouldn't hurt to make sure that viewing pictures is still enabled in the browser by going to TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS>ADVANCED>SHOW PICTURES(CHECK BOX SHOULD BE CHECKED, SHOW PLACEHOLDERS should be unchecked. Worth a look.

    Re: Multiple Problems (XP Home)

    Hi Preston,

I tried that early on as well as just about everything else I could come up with . Nothing works! This is a VERY frustrating problem, and I still am suspicious that somewhere along the line a registry entry got messed up. However, I have no idea what.

In light of the recent security flaw discovered in IE I am going to switch to the Mozilla browser tonight. It may prove to be a worthwhile workaround for your present dilemma as well!
