table formatting on hit enter (WordXP)

    Hiya

    I have a template formatted with a table & 7 columns.
If a user places their courson in the 1st column on the 1st paragraph line > and then hit the enter key. the result is a new paragraph is inserted and the table gets pushed down. pls see screen sample.
is it supposed to behave that way? or is there a way i can overcome this & resolve. so that when the enter key is pressed, it just adds a new paragraph line in the current column?

    many thanks Diana

Re: table formatting on hit enter (WordXP)

I believe that was a change in WordXP because of the difficulty of adding spaces above a table at the beginning of the page. In earlier version, if you wanted to add a line before a table, you had to insert a page break to get a position where you could insert a line. I am unable however to find any way of reverting to the previous behavior. A workaround is to add a bit of text and then insert the paragraph mark.

    I never noticed this change!

    Actually, I always used Table>Split Table. In fact, I still do. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Another workaround appears to be to type a character, press Shift+LeftArrow to select it, then press Enter. Not very convenient, but it shouldn't be a very frequent problem...

Re: table formatting on hit enter (WordXP)

    Wendell,

Word 2000 has a split table in the table menu, as Jefferson pointed out. I have Word 2000 and it has the command. I don't know if earlier versions had it. I think I discovered the use of split table when I first started using 2000 so don't know if this was there in earlier versions.

I recall the issue of inserting a blank row above a table at the beginning of a doc had been a long standing issue. At least for the people I know (myself included), we didn't think of using split table to insert a blank para at the beginning of a doc. I recall always saying - be careful NOT to insert a table at the very beginning of a doc because you might want text above the table and it's a PITA to get it once you've put in a table.

Split table came in very handy to insert a blank line above a table - no matter where in the table you are. In other words, if your cursor is in col x (any col) of row y and you use split table, it will insert a blank para not part of a table above row y.

CTRL+SHIFT+Enter works also in this capacity.

As you and Jefferson both pointed out, split table would work, except I thought I remembered it actually created two tables in earlier versions, and then you had to delete the top table if you wanted to center a header or something of the like directly above a table. And indeed that is what is going on now. When you do an Undo after pressing enter in the first cell, it says do you want to undo the split table command. Actually both CTRL+SHIFT+Enter, which creates a column break and inserting a page break with CTRL-Enter will do the trick.

Word 2000 behaves the same way (at least the most recent service packs, can't say about older).
The response from MS would probably be, "If you want the text in the cell to be lower, add Space Before, or set the cell alignment to the bottom of the cell."

Re: table formatting on hit enter (WordXP)

    hi thanks for help.
I've did a workaround by placing a paragraph line above my table. when i go into the 1st line in my table(in the columns) & hit the enter key> the result is it adds a new line within the column - so it works.

    many thanks again Diana

Re: table formatting on hit enter (WordXP)

    Hi Diana:
I'm late on this thread as I've been away, but as Joel noted, this has worked the same way in Word 2000 (& I seem to recall as far back as Word 6). The "workaround" is to type a single character in the upper left cell & press <Enter> to create a paragraph mark. Then go back & delete the character. Of course, if you aren't going to type anything on the first line of the cell, you can press Shift+Enter.
    Cheers,
