    win.98se/yahoo msgr.

About a year ago, i made the mistake of "upgrading msgr." from a perfectly good version. Ever since, i haven't been able to get voice in msgr, or chat. That goes for MSN too. For some reason, there is NO internet voice capability. And i have followed Yahoo's suggestions to the letter, many times, still no voice. Is this a yahoo problem or windows or a combination of both?Or, is windows 98 se NOT compatible with the newer versions of msn and messenger?

Probably the easiest way to fix this is to uninstall the "upgraded" version of Yahoo Messenger and install the version you had that worked for you. You can likely find it here. But if not try one of the links on this Google search. HTH

    Re: win.98se/yahoo msgr.

Thanks Doc, but i'm afraid it hasn't worked! Let me tell you what i just did.
1,Deleted all remnants of Yahoo and Messenger
2.Ran Window Washer and Norton Utilities
3.Ctrl.Alt.Del. till i closed ALL running programs except Explorer ans Systray
    4. Went to Freecreed and downloaded version 5.6133, which i believe was my last working version.
NOW.......................everything looked good, so i ran Audio Setup Wizard before trying voice in chat or
messenger. This is what happens and HAS happened since last year!
The first four tests work just fine, even the "connection" one that tells me i am successfully connected to the internet(
#4) Here's the problem! #5 is to connect me to internet voice chat! The test button never "lights" up, remains white, and the screen freezes and my messenger screen goes blank. And is "frozen" that way. I must manually shut down PC and start over! There has to be something within the PC, Windows OS or maybe i'm not holding my mouth just right! Ha! BY the way, when i try to get the Voice Chat portion of MSN to download? It just sits there and won't go any further. What a mess!.................Did i give you enough info to figure it out?

Frustrating as hell Doc, can you help?

    Bob

PS. Also i might need help to "redo" sound drivers??????????????????????????

It sounds like a driver issue. But there also seems to be something else going on. Do you know your sound card mfgr and model # ??? Do you have the install disks ??? The drivers can be downloaded, but you'll need the make and model #. All that freezing and crashing may be driver related but I don't know for sure.

    Re: win.98se/yahoo msgr.

I doubt the problem is with your Instant Messenger software, since it affects more than one application.

As a simple test, can you use the Windows Sound Recorder (Start - Run - sndrec32) to record audio? Before tinkering with your sound card software, isolate the problem and determine its source. At this stage it sounds likely that it has something to do with your audio configuration. You might also check the Volume controls to make sure that nothing is muted or has its volume slider turned all the way down.

    Re: win.98se/yahoo msgr.

    Thanks Mark and Doc
Perhaps i should tell you both what i CAN do.Anything i have downloaded from the net, and things i have put on hard drive over the years(music) i can hear! I have NO problem with any of that. All of my volume controls and that test of "recording" that Mark suggested, works fine as well.I'm not sure if you guys are familiar with Yahoo's Audio Setup Wizard, so here goes. There are 5 parts, Mic, Speakers, Background noise, Connection to net, and lastly, "connecting to voice chat, please wait". Unfortunately, at that point, the screen freezes.
In Messenger i can type and sometimes view a cam, but that's it! Even then, i get screen freeze. I'm thinking of just taking the PC somewhere and having the whole thing, reformatted. I have tried ALL my diagnostics, from Compag, Windows, Window Washer, eAcceleration, Norton............and they ALL say, everything is fine!
You guys have any more suggestions?............aside from buying a NEW PC!........LOL
I could do that or reformatt but it just P***** me off that it does this and just for my own satisfaction, i'd like to fix it
    Yhanks again guys!

    Bob
