2 PCS, online at same time?

    Hi -

Is it possible for 2 PCs to connect (to AOL) to the Internet at the same time using the same Dial-Up Number - or is this illegal? If legal, is this something an idiot could hook up, or do we need to bring in the engineering brigade?

To complicate matters, we use different versions of AOL: 4 and 6....

    Many thanks,
    ACM

Not sure about AOL - I believe they allow concurrent logons to the same account but I am not certain. The best answer would come from calling them.

As it relates to using the same dial-up number, you will need two separate phone lines, two modems and two PCs. Obviously you cannot connect two modems on the same phone line.

Perhaps a better solution would be to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) in Windows?

    Mark -

Thanks for the reply. I had looked into ICS before posting and, 'fraid to say, it's too complicated.

    Appreciate your post,

Just to be clear, you are looking to share the same connection to the network (AOL) correct? I interpret this as: you want to dial out on one computer, and then share internet access with the other one that is not dialed out. Am I correct on this point?

Re: 2 PCS, online at same time?

    Mark -

    Good morning.

Yes, we share the same phone number to access AOL. The question is can computer A be on line and then, using some device or other, allow computer B on at same time. (Two computers, one phone number to access AOL)

    Thanks, ACM

The last I heard was that AOL did NOT allow two users of the same account to on line at the same time. Even using a broadband connection AOL would not allow the multi users to be on line. Each had to have their own account and NOT just a user profile.

Re: 2 PCS, online at same time?

I did this last summer, or the summer before, when I was without an ADSL connection for awhile (Free AOL CDs do come in handy at times).

    I went to AnalogX and downloaded the Proxy program (it's free btw <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>).

The software needed to be installed on my "main computer", and configured to act as a proxy server. The secondary computer then needed the web browser and other internet programs configured to work with a proxy server, the IP address of the main computer.

The software download contains a fairly decent instructional text file - give it a shot, and yell if you need assistance.

    Chris -

Thanks for the info. Shall be investigating it!

Dave - That's what I believed, too. Thought there might be a workaround.

Re: 2 PCS, online at same time?

Sorry Dave - but that is not true. My dad has a dial up AOL account. He's in South Carolina. I can log into his account from my Nebraska location on broadband with two different computers (mine and my wife's for example) at the exact same time. In fact, we can even each be in Dad's email and delete, etc., refresh, and see the changes!

    Bill,
I think if there was a second profile in his account and you were to use the main and then log in using the second profile on a different computer you would not be so lucky.

Re: 2 PCS, online at same time?

You lost me. In this case, there are two profiles, his and my mom's. It is just as easy for me to be logged into both accounts as it is for 2 pcs to be logged into one account. I can even log into both accounts simultaneously on the same machine using two browser windows. Keep in mind, I am using broadband - if I were dialing into AOL while my dad was dialed into AOL, then there might be a problem.

Like I said in my first reply, last I heard , one could NOT do this. But since then AOL is pushing the use of broadband and my have made changes.

You're right, they are pushing broadband, anything to keep their fingers (code) in your system - personally, I view AOL as a necessary evil, along the lines, but not quite to the extreme, of MS. And since my folks (in their 80s) are used to AOL from years back, I am just happy they use computers - unfortunately, it forces me to keep abreast of AOL technology because being the family geek, I get the calls!
