    Cursor labels

When I hold my cursor over an icon, for example, smilies, toolbars, or other icons that I know have a label, the label doesn't appear. This is the case with any applications, Word, IE, OE, etc. I've checked the Windows and Office help menus, and did a Forum and Google search, but found nothing that specifically addresses this problem. Also ran AdAware, etc. and my virus program. It's a situation that I can live with although there are times I'd like to see the labels.

    DenGar,
Using TweakUI, you can check the mouse hover sensitivity and size. Perhaps this was changed to a longer hover time or sensitivity?

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
    Today it is called golf!

    Bob,

Checked it. No changes re. the mouse, and all settings are "normal."

    Re: Cursor labels

In Office applications, these are called "screen tips" and there are separate checkboxes for the menu and toolbar area, and for comments/tracked changes/footnotes, etc.:

    Tools>Customize...>Options>Show ScreenTips on toolbars
    Tools>Options...>View>ScreenTips

In Internet Explorer, I don't think there is a setting to display or not display TITLE or ALT text for elements in a web page that have them. Seems to be a global Windows setting, but I don't see it anywhere.

    Jefferson,

Both boxes were checked. This is a most peculiar problem. I've done further checking at other "help" sites but can find nothing. Guess I'll just have to live with it. Thanks.

Well, two outside possibilities: (1) the world's most retarded pop-up blocker; (2) a twitchy mouse that never sits still long enough to trigger the tooltip.

    Re: Cursor labels

Well, that would be the Google popup blocker--I'll check it out. But the mouse action is definitely copacetic.

On the various other suggestions about check boxes, have unchecked the boxes, ok'ed your way out. Shut down IE or Windows Explorer or better yet re-booted. Then reverse the process.

    Re: Cursor labels

Sorry to be arriving late with this silly question. Did you by chance look in Folder Options, View, to see if the checkbox for displaying tooltips has accidently gotten un-checked? It should be the next to last entry, at least it is on mine.

    Re: Cursor labels

I did look there. The checkbox was ticked.

    Joe,

Followed your suggestion. Now I can see the labels/tooltips in Word but still nothing in IE.

    Re: Cursor labels

Dengar, check the registry at this location:
<UL>HKEY_USERS.DEFAULTControl PanelDesktopUserPreferencesMask[/list]What is the value shown there? If it is (binary) 3E 00 00 00 that indicates that ToolTips are turned off. If this is the case, change the binary value to 9E 3E 03 80 and see if they reappear. This might require you to log off and back on, or a full reboot...

    Re: Cursor labels

    Mark,

My registry doesn't show "UserPreferencesMask." Instead, there are "ResourceLocale" and "WindowMetrics." And there are no 00 00 00 values in either of those entries. I should mention that I'm (still) using the Windows ME OS, if that makes a difference.

    Re: Cursor labels

Is it under your personal profile? For what it's worth, I've got:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop
    UserPreferencesMask = B0 32 05 80
