huge scratch files in temp dir (Word XP)

Anybody know why Word might leave huge scratch (i.e ~wrsxxxxx.tmp) files in the winnttemp directory? By huge, I mean over 500 MB. Thanks....

What? A program not cleaning up after itself? I once saw a KnowledgeBase article that decoded those first three letters, but I'm not sure it really was accurate. Some of the files relate to the clipboard and others may be intermediate saves to the file. Once you close all sessions of Word, anything left in that folder should be obsolete and could be dumped in the trash.

(Edited by HansV to make URL clickable - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>)

Thanks... The article I found (<!mskb=211632>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 211632<!/mskb>) said that ~wrs files are "scratch files", but was pretty vague about how they're used and when they're deleted. It also said that "The scratch file varies in size from 64 kilobytes (KB) to 3.5 megabytes (MB).", which clearly is not true in this case. Could it be that the documentation is wrong?

My impression is that the MSKB article contains portions that are quite old and probably haven't been updated recently. Still, scratch files of 500 MB are absurd...

Hans--

The article says that it applies to Wd 2000 and 2002, and was last reviewed in late 2003.

Yes, I saw that, but I still think they copied some parts from older articles without really checking them (MS-DOS files? )

I've certainly seen scratch files of this size arrive as a by-product of a corrupt document.
Word got itself confused and generated rather large work files - it also took a significant amount of time with the document which was also a clue.
After I repaired the document it stopped generating the files at that size.
