Offline Files synchronization issue (Windows XP SP1)

    Here is our setup.

Windows 2000 Server running in a mixed mode environment
    Users are on WinXP laptops

Here's the problem. We're trying to setup offline files for our laptop users so they can access data that would normaly be stored on their home drives on the network while they're outside the office.

If the Domain Users group are added to the Local Administrators group offline files work normally. Anything created or modified offline gets synched up when the user plugs back into the network and logs in. For security reasons we do not want all Domain Users to have administrator access to their machines.

When we add the Domain Users group to the Power Users group and not the Administrators group the following situation arises. When a file is created or modified offline it is still stored inside the Offline Files cache folder like normal. The problem occurs when the user plugs back into the netowrk and attempts to synchronize. The synchronization process goes through as normal and does not return any errors as if it had successfully completed the task. However the computer does not return to Online status and the Working Offline icon remains in the taskbar with a yellow triangle warning saying that files have been modified while offline and need synchronized. For some reason the files will not push out to the server.

I have tried adding the Power Users group to everything in the Local Policy in the security settings under User RIghts assignments in MMC and came up empty. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thank you.

Re: Offline Files synchronization issue (Windows XP SP1)

After much painstaking research a colleague and I stumbled upon the answer. Offline files requires the use of the C:Temp directory. If the user attempting to use offline files does not have full control access to the C:Temp directory the offline files will go through the synchronization process and report that it was successful meanwhile will not actually complete the task and remain offline. The solution is to add the user or group that the user is in to the C:Temp directory's security settings and grant them full control permissions.
