    URLBase 5

URLBase 5 is a powerful and easy to use internet shortcut manager. URLBase 5 provides a wide range of functionality, aimed to give you full control of your favorite websites, whether you're a novice or an expert.

You can import, export and synchronize your links from browser to browser all through a powerful easy to use interface. Options to export your links to HTML format or send your link collection by e-mail make it easy to publicize or share your links on the Internet. Management utilities including the ability to validate links and check for duplicates allow you to keep your links accurate and up to date. The interface can be customized and automated to meet your personal preferences.

The personal edition (plenty powerful) is <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>ware. For me, this was finally the answer to consolidating a zillion links, scattered over old Favorites folders, Mozilla bookmarks and ancient Netscape archives. Its power, in this capacity, is that it allows you to import from numerous and varied sources into a single database, then export the final tidied up & verified result into whatever format you like.

Just a tip for IE users... I used FavOrg (AM-Deadlink does similar) to check/ correct all these old links, since the freebie doesn't have this feature. The drawback is that these progs look for the Favorites folder, and will only deal with that. So I moved all my current favorites to a temp location and exported my big, new database to the Favorites folder. After getting the links checked and the Favicons updated, I then imported the URLs in this folder to a new empty database, to become my verified URL archive. Then delete these URLs and move the "real" favorites back again, of course. I imagine a similar thing could be done by renaming an existing Mozilla bookmark.htm file, and importing/ exporting to the appropriate format/ location.

This one gets 9.86 /10 from me!

    Thanks Alan,
I'm going to check this out at home over the long weekend (in the USA). Looks promising. BTW, why only 9.86 <img src=/S/disappointed.gif border=0 alt=disappointed width=15 height=15>? I'm sure the author would have expected at least a 9.865 <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

<hr>BTW, why only 9.86 ? I'm sure the author would have expected at least a 9.865 <hr>It's not actually as bad as it seems. Many people forget that the Australian system has gone all metric now. So 9.86, in fact, now translates to a shade over 9.865 in the old imperial units. HTH <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Hi Alan
Have you upgraded to the new URLBase 6? Do you like it as well as you did version 5? Are you still using the personal edition or do you recommend the paid professional version?

    I know, questions, questions, questions.. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Thanks!

Funny you should ask! I only upgraded to v6 last week. Haven't decided if I like it better or not, coz I had not been using v5 for quite a while. v6 Personal Edition won't check validity of links (need Pro). I can't remember if v5 does this or not. If yes, I'll definitely revert. Also, v6 is perhaps "overbusy" for my liking... lots of UI stuff I don't need and would rather not see. The jury is still out - I'll let you know when we reach our verdict!

Yes, I wouldn't want "overbusy" either. If you haven't been using V5, have you been using something else? I'm still trying to find a nice manager to use, something with a search so I can find a site that I had visited "a long time ago". <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

Can't wait to find out what you think.

    Thanks again,

BTW, I noticed that they will be discontinuing the personal version as of 11/1/06 and will only be supporting the paid professional version. I'm not sure that the personal version will even be available for download after that.

    Just an FYI

    Re: URLBase 5

    You've certainly made some work for me, haven't you! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

I did a bit of soul (+ www) searching in view of your comments. I decided that URLBase <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> is probably lacking in some features. I'm now trying a couple of replacement candidates:

JetLinks 1.2, which is similar to URLBase, but which has a search capability.
Check&Get - Bookmark Manager to validate URLs, which URLBase doesn't do (contrary to what I posted originally).

Both are <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> but you need to go to the bottom of Download page to get Check&Get v1.14 (freeware), then get a simple free registration# by e-mail. I've not found an all-in-one freeware app that does both of these functions, but I believe it will be possible to use these two in tandem easily enough (perhaps even easier with a little scripting help). I'll let you know how things pan out.

    Alan,
    I didn't want you just lounging around. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15> (No pun intended.)
It doesn't have to be Free. I don't mind paying for a good software that suits my needs.

    Have fun!

    Hi Alan,
Have you reached a verdict on the software you were trying? Have you tried any others by chance?

    Just thought I'd see if you were still working on it. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

    Take care,
    Louise
