Unremovable link on Start Menu (WinXP)

I dragged a frequently-used word doc to the start menu for easy access but now I can't remove the item. "Remove from this list" does nothing. I can't delete it. It isn't a shortcut (as I thought it would be) as if I rename the item it renames the underlying file. If I move the file the link fails but works again if I move it back. It's quite irritating as I'm sure there must be a simple solution. Any ideas?

Can you see it/delete it using windows explorer in "c:documents and settingsYOUR-USER-IDStart Menu" or "c:documents and settingsAll UsersStart Menu"?

Can you just drag it from the start menu to the desktop or some other folder?

nope. just puts a copy or shortcut whereever I drag it to. there's no "move" option if I right-click whilst dragging. I get an error if the underlying file is not in the correct folder. I don't understand why the item on the Start menu isn't a link or shortcut.

You could try the "Clear List" button in Start Menu - Properties | Customize | General tab | Programs.

If you right-click the entry on the Start Menu and choose Properties, the dialog should give you the path to the file. Not accurate?

It should tell you the path to the file and exactly what it is. <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>
