'Add to Dictionary' grayed out (2002)

I think this is a new problem -- since I recall having added many words to Word's dictionary in the past -- but for some reason, when i right-click a word, "Add to Dictionary" is grayed out.

How do I fix this? Thanks.

If the word is already in the dictionary, the option to add will not be there. This may be what you are seeing.

Nope; Word underlines it in red, which means it doesn't recognize it...

Just tried it. Unfortunately, it didn't do the trick.

Are you sure the custom dictionary is still there?

Check Tools>Options...>Spelling & Grammar tab>Custom Dictionaries... button. Is the .DIC file "checked"? Does it show at all?

If you don't see any, try navigating back to

    Cocuments and SettingsusernameApplication DataMicrosoftProof

and see if you can find it. Or maybe yours is under the All Users user?

(Edited by Jon_Rick on 05-Jul-04 23:16. )
Actually, Tools>Options>Spelling & Grammar>Custom Dictionaries reveals that I have no dictionaries! I know I had a big one at one point; what could have happened to it?

Cocuments and SettingsJonathan RickApplication DataMicrosoftProof is empty.

There is no Proof folder in Cocuments and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMicrosoft or Cocuments and SettingsDefault UserApplication DataMicrosoft

Should I just create--or add?--a new dictionary? And should I put it in the Jonathan Rick or All Users folder?

Also: The only .DIC files I have are 3 files in C:WINDOWSServicePackFilesi386lang

    Thanks.

Do a search for custom.dic. If you can't find it, you will have to build a new one. If you find it and you cannot see it in Word, create a new one and paste the contents of the old one into the new one by editing the new one.

Good question. I don't know. Unless you deleted your profile and then re-created it, or got a particularly bad virus of some sort, there's no reason for anything in the Proof folder to be deleted. Any chance you have a backup?

It is possible that a custom dictionary has reached the 64kb limit, in which case you can't add another word. You would then need to create a a second dictionary. However, it's strange that you can't find any dictionary. Do a search for *.dic on all your drives.

Thanks to everybody for your responses. I just created a new Custom Dictionary, and everything seems to be working. Thanks again.
