    Numbers Formatting (2003)

In cell A3 I key in the figures of $1,234.57 (to 2 decimal places) and format the cell to show the number to the nearest dollar, it will show as $1,235.

Subsequently when I go to cell A3, the figures becomes $1,235. The decimal place is missing.

What is the cause of this?

    Select Tools | Options...
    Activate the Calculation tab.
Make sure that the check box labeled "Precision as displayed" is clear.

I suspect you have set "Precision as Displayed" in Tools, options, Calculation tab.
I mostly advise against this setting, because your results are affected by the number format you set. It is better to explicitly round your numbers where you want to, using Excel's rounding functions.

Beside this problem, when I key in $110,641.65 in cell B5, the amount will appear as $110.64.

    What's the problem??

What if you leave out the dollar sign?

Go to Tools|Options. Activate the Edit tab and make sure there is NOT a check mark next to "Fixed Decimal".
