# Thread: Calculating with 'IF' (9.0.2720)

1. ## Calculating with 'IF' (9.0.2720)

This is a very basic question, but my strong suit is NOT Excel. I am calculating by multiplying a set dollar amount "times" the number of boxes bought, taken from another cell. I need to know how to NOT have the calculation take place if there is a text entry in another specific cell. I hope I've made this clear enough for someone to help. Please let me know if you need clarification. Thanks!

Since you only provide a very general description, without specific details, my reply cannot be specific either.

Say that:
A1 contains the number of boxes
A2 contains the set dollar amount
A3 contains a text (or not)
A4 is to contain the result. The formula in A4 could look like this:

If you are looking for any text value in A3:

=IF(A3="",A1*A2,"")

or if you are looking for a specific text value in A3:

=IF(A3="specific text","",A1*A2)

If this does not help, please provide specific details.

I won't be able to try the calculation until tomorrow, but it sounds like it's what I'm looking for. I'll let you know. If not, I'll really try to be more "specific". Thanks!

Thanks so much -- the calculation worked exactly as I needed it to! You guys are always the ones I think of first when I need an answer to a software problem
