How to index just one section of a document (2000)

I have created a long document that has 4 sections:

    - Title Page - no page numbers
    - Table of Contents - page numbers start over, format = i, ii, iii
    - Body - page numbers start over, format = 1,2,3
    - Index - page numbers start over, format = Index-1, Index-2, Index-3

I have only marked index entries in the Body section. When I create the index, Word counts page numbers from the beginning of the document (Title Page) instead of from page 1 of the Body. Thus, an item that falls on page 3 of the Body shows up as page 7 in the Index. How do I tell the Word index to use the page numbering of the Body section?

I thought this might have been a common problem, but I did not find it when I searched. Thanks for your help.

I did a little test and got the expected result in Word 2002...

If you view the internal field code syntax for your index (press Alt+F9), what do you have? Here are some examples:

    INDEX c "1" z "1033" (default)

    INDEX s chapter d "." (help file)

Hmmm, nothing strange there. What happens when you right-click the INDEX field and choose Update Field? If that isn't an option, try pressing F9 to trigger the update.

Boy, do I feel dumb! When I update the field as you suggest, the page numbers correct themselves. You're right. It's exactly as it should be. Can I just crawl into a hole now? Many thanks!!!

If you tick the Update Fields box under Tools>Options...>Print tab, a File>Print Preview will trigger the update. That might be more convenient than doing it manually. (In the case of a Table of Contents, it asks a question, so perhaps that's more annoying...)

Just when I thought there were no new tricks to learn in Word ... (Just kidding!) That looks like a wonderful piece of advice. I will definitely add that 'tick' to my repertoire. Again, thanks.
