    Finalising a DB (2k)

    Now that my database is done, which files are required to be on the server?

    Note: i split the DB like people suggested, so i have a mdb .be file. There is also a security file for the DB.

    You should put the backend on the server, and preferably give each user an individual copy of the frontend database and of the secured workgroup file. Also provide the users with a shortcut that opens the frontend with the secured workgroup file. The target of the shortcut should look like this:

    "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeMsaccess.exe" "C:AccessMyDatabase.mdb" /wrkgrp "C:AccessSecured.mdw"

    with, of course, the appropriate paths and file names substituted. It is also possible, although less desirable, to use a shared front end database and/or a shared secured workgroup file. Change the path in the target accordingly.

    Giving each user a separate copy of the front end database and of the workgroup file minimizes the chance of corruption. If something goes wrong, just give the user a fresh copy. Also, if you have to modify the front end, just distribute a copy of the modified front end to the users. This assumes that they are not allowed to store custom queries etc. in their front end, for distributing a new copy will overwrite all local customizations.

    i don't quite understand why your shortcut calls access, mine just points straight to the file:
    target is:
    "Cocuments and SettingsMy DocumentsDrawing DatabaseProgress Database.mdb"

    -os
    <img src=/w3timages/blueline.gif width=33% height=2>
    <big>John</big>

    There reason for specifying the location of the msaccess.exe is that you cannot specify the workgroup option unless you specify the executable path - no idea why it's that way, but that's the way it is. Your's will work as long as you don't need to specify a workgroup file.

    If you have joined (become member of) a secured workgroup file, you can open a secured database directly, or using a shortcut that points straight to the database file. In general, it is not practicable to let all users of your database join a secured workgroup; they will remain members of the default workgroup file System.mdw. To let them open a secured database, you provide a shortcut that opens the database AND points to the shortcut; you must use start Access explicitly for this.
