Mozilla Thunderbird 0.2 (Thunderbird email users)

Are there any users of Thunderbird 0.2 out there? If so I wondered if this email program has proven to be a goodie, a friend is having probs with OE that still cant be resolved. I thought maybe a clean install of an entirely different email client might be the answer, she uses a lot of graphics (embedded in emails), does anyone know if Thunderbird is okay with this? I have been reading the faq's at mozilla.org, and googling for info, but I am reluctant to just install it for her, as I have only ever used OE and have no experience with it. Any thoughts or suggestions sure would be appreciated, thanks people. :-)

Hang in here, Cyberdance, until one of our actual users pops in to give you an answer. I would ask though if you're sure you were looking at the correct place, because I see Thunderbird at version 0.7.1 on the web page. Anyway, I haven't made the jump yet to Firebird or Thunderbird as I've been stalling until they get a bit further along towards version 1.0. I'm still using Mozilla and have NEVER had any problem with its mail capabilities, including HTML or graphics. The two things I've always missed are that you can't PASTE a graphic image into an outgoing email from the clipboard, i.e. Ctrl-V and I don't know why. You must "embed" or "attach" and that works just fine. Also, Mozilla mail hasn't been blessed with spell checking, but I don't miss that too much. I'm not recommending that your friend install Moz if there's only a need for an email client. I'm just hoping that all the "good stuff" in Mozilla has been passed along to Firebird AND Thunderbird. I think it's true of Firebird for all the positive comments here in The Lounge alone. Hang in .....

Re: Mozilla Thunderbird 0.2 (Thunderbird email use

I've been using Thunderbird since release 0.3, and currently running on release 0.6. I've had a few problems with the built in Junk Mail filtering, but that could simply be becuase of the wacky people, and their even wackier email addresses, that contact me.

The GUI is similar to OE, in that it takes very little time to get used to it.

Re: Mozilla Thunderbird 0.2 (Thunderbird email use

Hi there Al, thanks for getting back. While checking out Thunderbird I did note the most recent version is 0.7, but on checking out several places online, it was suggested the earlier version was perhaps more solid. I happen to have version 0.2 on a cd, and figured maybe I could throw it onto the machine I mentioned rather than waiting for it to download (on dialup). Thought if it was doing what is needed (graphics related) she could upgrade online. (Hope that made sense :0). I also have a full version of the latest Netscape (with mail), but thought it was too big, when MSIE seems to be working just fine, and is preferred by the girl concerned.

Oh, another thing I just thought of - do you know if it supports newsgroups? I will have another look at the homepage, I did find there was not a great amount of detail on Thunderbird. Netscape is an alternative, I have used it in the past (at work) and found it fine. Thanks Al, I just thought I would run it by you folks in here beforehand.

Oh Lordy, you're right in NOT installing a bloated Netscape for someone who needs mail only! I just wanted to make sure you were aware of the newer version, but there's probably nothing wrong with installing the .2 - she can always get up to date later. And yes, it does support newsgroups, at least it does now, and I would hope it has since version .2 came out. Good luck and let us hear from you!

Hi Al,

I've been a long-time Mozilla user and I'm puzzled by your statement:

Also, Mozilla mail hasn't been blessed with spell checking

.

My version of Mozilla mail is blessed with a spell checker. Are you perhaps referring to Thunderbird?

Cheers,
Regards,
PaulB

He's not referencing any recent version of Thunderbird, if that's what Al means (and I'm quite sure he doesn't -- Al's usually right on top of things ). Release 0.6 has the spell checker included.

The last time I used the Mozilla client regularly, was around 1.3. However, I don't recall if spell checker was there or not.

Well, I'll be ! I'm eating <see attachment> and thanks for the vote of confidence, Chris, but I'm guilty this time. When the heck did they sneak that one in on me? I've been with Mozilla ever since just prior to Version 1 and the doggone email client didn't have spell check, so I quit paying any attention to it. I really don't know at what dot-version they put it in, but MEA CULPA to all. And thanks for pointing it out, Paul!

Re: Mozilla Thunderbird 0.2 (Thunderbird email use

...and that solves that mystery!

I downloaded Thunderbird to test it out. While it seems quite similar to Mozilla mail, there are some differences. For one thing, I can't get its spell checker to work. Using the address book is quite different also. Gotta look into this a bit more.
Regards,
PaulB
