    Table of Figures

I have a Word 2000 document with 24 figures. I want to make a table of figures. I get the Table of Figures tab of the Index and Tables screen, but Word cannot detect my figures. I can't find anything in the Help screens on this.
LATER: I figured out that it couldn't find the figures because I had put the screen shots in text boxes to make them easier to manipulate. I guess I have the choice of an automated table of figures or pictures that are easily manipulated.

    In Word 2000, that does appear to be the case. <img src=/S/frown.gif border=0 alt=frown width=15 height=15>

    Fern,

While captions in text boxes aren't detected, if they are in frames, they are (why? who knows?). So you still get most of the positioning capability you are looking for. You can convert your text boxes to frames (see Format Text Box, Text Box tab), or add the Insert Frame command to your tool bar (see Tools Customize).

    As for Why, <grin>

A text box falls in the drawing layer, where as a Frame falls in the text layer. Most Word features, such as a Table of Figures, will not detect information stored in the drawing layer.

That works great, Flip! <img src=/S/joy.gif border=0 alt=joy width=23 height=23> Do you know if I can add some descriptive text to the table of figures?

    Fern,

I'm not sure what you mean. Can you say more?

    Re: Table of Figures

I am doing an instruction manual for basic Excel, and I want to be able to say e.g. "Figure 1 - Page Setup Screen" so that people can identify the Figure that will help them most. Also, I discovered that if you are converting the text boxes to frames, you have to convert all of them before you put the captions on for the numbers to come out right.
Again, thanks for taking the time to ponder this.

    Re: Table of Figures

Normally, the entire caption appears in the table of figures. Is the caption in the frame just "Figure 1"? If you expand it to read "Figure 1 - Page Setup Screen" in the frame, it should appear in toto in the table (after you update fields, of course).

You're right about the funny numbering in the TOF when only some are frames. They all have to be, as BAM described, in the text level.

Glad to be able to help. It's nice to be able to give back now and then.
