Creating a simple Pivot Table (2002)

I'm finding the Pivot Table in Access 2002 a real nightmare to work out compared to previous versions! Assuming I have a Staff Table with fields called Office, Grade and Salary. I want Office as the row heading, Grade as column heading - both of which are fine. How can I get it to Sum the salaries per Office and Grade? When I add Salary to the data/detail area it just lists all of them!!! Isn't it possible to get back the previous Layout option which was soooo easy? Andy.

Pivot Tables are new in Access 2002 - they were not available in Access 2000 and before. You can still create crosstab queries, exactly the same way as before: either use the Crosstab Query Wizard, or create a query in design view and select Query | Crosstab Query.

In that case I don't understand what you mean by "get back the previous Layout option which was soooo easy" - there were NO pivot tables in Access before the 2002 version.

Re: Creating a simple Pivot Table (2002)

Access 2000 allowed the user to create an Access form with an Excel pivot table object in it. It didn't have a native pivot table capability. However, as far as I can see, the pivot table wizard, rather than the Autoform: Pivot Table Wizard behaves the same as it did in 2000.

On my version of Access 2002 (SP-2), although the New Form dialog states "This wizard creates a form with a Microsoft Excel PivotTable", the PivotTable Wizard creates an Access PivotTable form, same as AutoForm: PivotTable, not an embedded Excel pivot table <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

I wasn't talking about what the interface says, Hans. In 2000, you actually see an instance of Excel open when you use the wizard to create the pivot table form. In 2002, the Pivot Table Wizard gives you the same simplified interface that appeared in 2000, while the AutoForm: PivotTable gives you a more powerful but less friendly interface. The end result may be pretty much the same, but the AutoForm: PivotTable requires more understanding of exactly what you're trying to build.
