    'Iffy' USB Ports (Win XP)

The USB ports on the front of my Dell have "sort of" stopped working. They don't recognize my USB storage drive or my Clie - but, my USB mouse works fine in the ports. I've reset XP back to a point where they were working and - nothing changed. Dell tells me to backup my HD and reinstall Win XP. Is this really the solution or is there something less drastic and easier or is this a "cop out" by Dell, since the machine is still under warranty?

Have you added and USB devices to the back side connectors?

Some of the earlier machines with front USB connectors, were just "Shared" connectors with the rear ones, which mean front OR rear connection NOT both.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Since it's under warranty, it must be a fairly new Dell!

Have you had a look at the Properties of each of the USB Serial Bus Controllers in Device Manager in Computer Management in Administrative Tools in Control Panel (or accessed by some more straightforward method?).

You could compare them to see if there's any obvious difference between the working and not-quite-working-properly ones...

I haven't added any new USB devices to the back outlets but, I'm going to try the extra one on the back and see if I can connect my Clie.

    John,
I've check each of the USB Serial Bus Controllers in Properties and they're all working.

I wonder whether any connections might have come loose inside? Some USB devices draw more power than others; maybe there is a problem with the power??

Re: 'Iffy' USB Ports (Win XP)

Hi and thank you for your reply.
What's strange about the whole thing is
    1. The USB mouse works in the front USBs as well as the regular USB for the mouse
    2. My PDA will re-charge but won't connect to the PC while it's in the front USBs and the Memory Stick doesn't register in My Computer as a Drive.
    3. I switched the mouse to another USB outlet on the back of the PC and it wouldn't work there
    4. The PC won't recognize my PNY USB storage device - which Win XP should since it gets recognized on my PC.
    Strange!
