BlackIce

There has been quite a bit of discussion about the use of various firewall applications - ZA, Nortons, Sygate,...to name a few. I have always been intrigued by what I have read about Black Ice. I searched our Lounge and found just a little reading material about it. Mostly however, I gathered from what I have read here, folks were not impressed with it and felt that it was the cause of some problems. I know that we cannot specifically recommend one product, but I was wondering how this app. stacks up today - in people's opinions?

I don't use Black Ice myself, but one of my friends has been using it for a couple of years now, and he is very satisfied with its performance and with the completeness of its reports. I don't think he has had any problems with it.
As with anti virus software, each brand of firewall seems to have both ardent admirers and sworn enemies.

Re: BlackIce

BlackICE Defender was one of the earliest personal intrusion detection products, combined with a firewall. It had a big technology lead until the upstart ZoneAlarm came along with application control features and an irresistable price.

ISS, the company that purchased BlackICE, now named BlackICE PC Protection, does not seem to be developing and promoting it as aggressively as the competition. I looked at the BlackICE product information pages, and saw no reviews or awards. This is very strange in the firewall market, it seems that everyone can win one competition or another, or at least get a good quote. Not sure whether this means the product has fallen behind, or that the marketing people are not pushing this product. Perhaps this is because it has another product for the corporate market, RealSecure Desktop, that is more profitable? Hmmm.

Anyway, I would not throw out this product in favor of a new one unless it has some major gap in functionality. There are so many other products and services clamoring for those dollars.

Re: BlackIce

I think I may have posted something here in The Lounge at one time or another, since I used BlackIce Defender when I first got DSL, but BEFORE I had a "somewhat" secure router. I had no complaints about the software failing, per se, but the "alarms" were enough to drive me crazy sometimes. I used to get MANY messages, every day, about attempted intrusions and drove myself crazy sending email to "abuse@xxxxxx.com" trying to get someone to do something about these alleged dirtbags, mostly to no avail. I quit using BlackIce when I realized that the $50 cost (at that time) was an annual thing and I decided at the time to go with ZA. I don't mind paying, but I thought that the annual fee was a tad excessive. Looking at their current web pages, it seems that the initial cost is $40 with an annual renewal fee of $20.

Thanks for the replies. When I checked, I did not see much by way of reviews on their website and that initiated my question to our knowledgeable group! . And I also hadn't realized that there was an annual fee involved! I am not interested in paying every year for a product that I think should be kept up to date - at least for a few years - as a service to the customer who was willing to shell out the $$ in the first place. I have followed the Sygate thread and may go in that direction as it seems pretty user friendly!! One thing is for sure, when someone wants some information, everyone is great to respond!! I appreciate it!

Steve Gibson (http://www.grc.com) was critcal of BlackICE early on, however I haven't kept myself up to date on his views. Quickly, I've found this link on his site regarding BlackICE.
