AutoText with date freezes Word (Word 2002 SP-2)

(Edited by st3333ve on 09-Jul-04 23:39. )
If I try to insert any of several of the built-in AutoText entries that includes a date (e.g., Author, Page #, Date in the Header/Footer category, or Last printed), Word stops responding. The first time I experienced this, the AutoRecovered copy of the document it happened to showed that Word had gone into a loop and entered the date over and over and over and over. Since then there haven't been any AutoRecovered copies to examine, but it happens consistently.

If I go to the AutoText tab of the Tools-->AutoCorrect Options dialog and select any of the problematic entries in this dialog, Word also stops responding.

I renamed Normal.dot and let Word generate a fresh Normal template and have temporarily moved my macros template out of the Startup folder, but this "clean" version of Word is misbehaving in the same way.

Has anyone else encountered this?

If anyone who hasn't made use of these AutoText entries is inclined to try to replicate my problem, I urge you to first exit out of (don't just save) any open documents first.

FOLLOW-UP NOTE: By using the Office Application Recovery tool, I was able to recover another frozen document. This time I had tried to insert the Created on entry, and once again, the "freeze" was caused by Word inserting the date over and over and over and over. (This time it happened with the "clean" version of Word -- i.e., a newly-created Normal template and no global templates loaded.)

There might still be an add-in affecting Word. I'd first try a repair from the Help menu. If that doesn't work, make sure that you've located all possible add-ins, not just in one startup folder. See <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>.

Thanks for the response. I went through the steps in your "Systematic Approach" post and rebuilding the Data key finally solved the problem. However, the problem immediately returned when I reset my option settings.

Through further experimentation with my option settings, I've concluded that the bug (if that's what it is) arises from the interaction between AutoText entries with date fields and the "Typing replaces selection" option (under Tools-->Options-->Edit). If "Typing replaces selection" is True (the default), there's no problem. But if I reset "Typing replaces selection" to False, trying to insert, for example, the "Author, Page #, Date" AutoText entry (in the Header/Footer category) causes Word to go into an endless loop in which it inserts the date over and over and over until I shut Word down. (The growing heap of added dates is invisible at the time; all I can see is that Word is frozen.)

If anyone wants to try to replicate this, please exit out of any documents you care about first.

Okay, with TRS turned off I can replicate the problem. When I click the button to send an error report to Microsoft, it opens a web page saying updates are available. I don't know whether this is a generic message or specific to this problem. (I never got around to installing SP3...)

Re: AutoText with date freezes Word (Word 2002 SP-2)

Thanks for the confirmation. It looks like this is what Woody might call a "big fat juicy bug", although if almost nobody turns off TRS these days, perhaps it's fat and juicy but not so big. (I note, however, that In Using Office XP, Woody and Ed tell their readers that "many advanced users" turn TRS off "to avoid accidentally deleting text.")

Based on my experience and a previous post (concerning an application error with a different trigger), I'm guessing Microsoft steers you to SP-3 as a general policy when you send it an error message from SP-2 and it doesn't have anything more specific to tell you.

If there's any brave soul out there who has upgraded to SP-3 and doesn't mind triggering a Word freeze in the interests of science, the steps to take would be:

1. Exit out of all documents.
2. Go to Tools-->Options-->Edit and uncheck "Typing replaces selection".
3. Choose Insert-->AutoText-->Header/Footer-->"Author, Page #, Date".
4. See if Word inserts your name and a couple of fields at the Insertion Point or, alternatively, goes into a coma.
5. Let us know what happened.
6. Return to Tools-->Options-->Edit and re-check "Typing replaces selection".

Thanks in advance...

Hmmm. Doesn't happen with Word 2000. However, you would think that it would have popped up before if both you & Jefferson can duplicate the problem. I could find NOTHING about this on the KB. Hope there is a fix.
Cheers,
