    Archiving .pdf images (2002 SP-2)

    Customers have been emailing orders to me for some time now, but in a variety of ways. My largest customer is now emailing the orders with a .pdf attachment (Adobe; approx 10k). Due to the inconsistency of format in the past, I had always printed the body of the email or whatever format of attachment (Word, Excel, etc.) and then filed them away by date. While I will still need to maintain a "paper" file for other customers, I can eliminate a good deal of volume by saving the .pdf images from my largest customer.

    I, basically, want to know what the best method would be. As this file would grow considerably over time (generally 180 day retention) I'm thinking I should probably store them in a separate db with a linked table. I would like to be able to call the image from a form in my current db. There is a unique identifier for each image (txtReleaseNo), which also exists in my current db.

    You should not store PDFs or image files in an Access database. Instead, store the path+filename in a text field, or in a hyperlink field. With a text field, you can use a command button on a form that opens the PDF file:

    Private Sub cmdShowPDF_Click()
    Application.FollowHyperlink Me.PDFPath
    End Sub

    where PDFPath is the name of the field containing the path+filename. With a hyperlink field, you only need to click on it to open the PDF file.

    Hans:

    I decided to go with the hyperlink (giving the txtbx a cmdbtn appearance). This works wonderfully! The image is readily available by clicking the txtbx, but there is no "bloat" to the db. Thanks again for your assist!
