Arabic (Saudi Arabia)?? (Office XP? / Original)

    I'm very wierded out.

I had to purchase a new laptop and in the process of loading all my old stuff onto it, I also had to prepare a work proposal.

This is a template I originally created in Word XP. I copied it to an older laptop with Office 2000 and began the document there. Then I copied everything back to the new laptop. I made no edits to the template while on the older template.

As the attached graphic shows, my template and document have "(Complex) Arabic Saudi Arabia" and "English U.S." as the language. It displays arabic text. I have a tab on my Tools | Options dialog called "Complex Scripts" I can change the language to "English U.S." until the cows come home (in fact, they've been home for hours), and it still displays this way.

The laptop is an IBM with Windows XP Pro. The language is set to English and there are no other options.

I've been through Control Panel | Add/Remove Software | Change Office XP. At one time I had a tab called "right-to-left" or something. I've unchecked every blessed language setting there is!

    What in heaven's name did I inadvertently install and how do I undo it? <img src=/S/confused3.gif border=0 alt=confused3 width=45 height=45>

    Help!

OK, I'm still wierded out, but the Arabic is gone.

Since my post, I decided it couldn't do any harm to apply SP1 to Office XP. I restarted and all the Arabic was gone.

Now, applying that patch requires you to restart your PC. It's possible that restarting might have done the trick, too, but now I'm patched (to SP1 anyway) AND my mysterious language choice is missing.

Thought I'd post rather than just erase in case this happens to anyone else. Also, my advice is don't try to deal with this in the middle of the night...

Good to hear it got fixed. Someone posted something like this a year or two ago, and I don't remember whether we figured out what caused it.
