    Limit 'File Open' types (2000)

    When I open Access and use the 'File | Open' menu to open a database, Access by default gives me a list of 'Data Files' -- Access files, but also Excel (and whatever else it may deem as a data file). Is there a way to change this default to list only Access file types? If I am going into Access I want to use Access files and it would be nice to cut the clutter out automatically.

    Re: Limit 'File Open' types (2000)

    If I select File | Open in Access 2002, I see only Access file types by default, although I can select Excel files and several other types from the "Files of type" dropdown list. See screenshot. If my memory is correct, it was the same in Excel 97; I have skipped Access 2000. Have you set "Files of type" to "All files (*.*)", or is Access 2000 different from 97 and 2002 in this respect?

    That was indeed a peculiarity of Access 2000. Access XP defaults to Access data files, but I haven't explored a method for changing the dialog in A2k. It would probably require a registry hack. Perhaps someone else got annoyed with it while using 2000 and can contribute the information.

    Re: Limit 'File Open' types (2000)

    My installation of A2K defaults to the "Data Files" filter for File Open, see attached. If you select a different file type from list, the change will persist in current session of Access only. When exit Access & reopen, defaults back to Data Files. I find it equally annoying - you get all the clutter in dialog as shown (text files, XL files, etc) - there seems to be no (obvious) Registry setting that controls this behavior that can be modified.

    Mark and Charlotte,

    Thanks for clearing this up. It looks like David will have to live with it until he upgrades to Access 2002 or higher.

    The only additional info I could quickly find from MS is this MSKB article:

    ACC2000: Cannot See All Extensions in the Files of Type List

    The article alludes to fact that you can't see all the file extensions that "Data Files" encompasses and provides following list:

    The complete list of extensions for Data Files is:

    *.mdb; *.adp; *.mdw; *.mda; *.mde; *.ade; *.txt;
    *.csv; *.tab; *.asc; *.xls; *.dbf; *.db

    Unfortunately, the article does not provide any method for changing the dialog's default file type.... <img src=/S/frown.gif border=0 alt=frown width=15 height=15>
