    Updating DB Files (2k)

my database is populated via excel spreadsheets, but not linked to spreadsheets, it uses the normal db table system (linked to a back end file). These tables need to be updated periodically (every week or two) to contain the most up-to-date information in it. however, whatever data that was inputted into the db needs to stay there as well, so i can't just delete the table and re-populate it.

my problem is: apparently Access appends information to a table by default when importing from an excel spreadsheet (or any file?), but i need it to overwrite some of the feilds in my db. For example, say some row in the database is referred to as an 'AA', and in the new file it is referred to as an 'AB'. I would want this file to stay in the database, and just be changed to an 'AB'. But Access overlooks difference and just doesn't add it. how do i solve this problem?

    Re: Updating DB Files (2k)

I often have to do this. My solution is not the only one, but here is what I do: I read the spreadsheet into an an empty "temp" table with the same structure as the table I want to update with this data. From the temp table into the master table, I do two queries: an update query based on the unique key; and an append query, based on records not found matching to that same unique key. I can go into a lot more details if this is not self-explanatory.

Please provide enough details for us to help you. For instance, how exactly can we determine which records should be updated and which should be added? Be specific: table names, field names, ...
