    Locked out (PPT XP)

We were working on one file stored on the server. We tried to add a word to the dictionary. PPT would not allow the word to be added. We opened Word to access the Custom dictionary. We entered the word. Closed Word then closed and saved PPT. When we restarted PPT and tried to open the file we got the message that the file could not be accessed. We couldn't open the file from any computer, couldn't import the file into a new PPT presentation, and couldn't place it in a Word document. It acted like when the file was closed the connection wasn't broke between the computer and the file. The computer was rebooted with no help. When looking at the properties of the file it wasn't blocked and security was open to everyone.

Does anyone have any ideas. Thank you. Fay

You can see if you have a *.TMP file on your system from about that time. If so, see if you can open it.

If not, your last option is to try using the presentation program in Star Office or Open Office. Sometimes these can retrieve files which PPT considers corrupt.

Just as a follow up, I was able to recover Fay's file using the presentation application from Open Office. I'm sure the formatting was lost, but at least most, if not all, of the text was recovered.

For anyone needing this info in future, Open Office is available at http://www.openoffice.org/
