Outlook or OE on network (OE 6 or Outlook 2000)

I run a small network with about 6 PCs for our church.

We access email from our ISP via POP3, storing mailboxes and address book on local PCs.

I would like to store the mailboxes on our local server. I would also like a single shared address book on the server. This will enable sharing the address book and enable us to backup the mailboxes, not possible with storing them separately on each PC . My problem is I haven't got a clue where to start. I personally use Novell Groupwise thru my work, so supporting Outlook users is a perennial challenge!

We run OE6, and Office 97, but have licences for Office2000, so it is no drama to upgrade to Office 2000 to get Outlook 2000.

What's your budget for this project? If you can come up with about $3000, a well configured Windows XP computer plus IMail Sever and its SOFTWIN Bitdefender antivirus plug-in should take care of you. Not as slick as Exchange or Groupwise, but one of the best POP3/IMAP/LDAP/Webmail products going.

For similar money, you can get set up with Windows Small Business Server 2003, Standard Edition, which includes Exchange Server 2003 and licenses for 5 users. You'll have to choose some kind of third party antivirus software, and I suspect you might have to upgrade all your mail clients to Outlook 2003 immediately.

I pulled some Dell configurations for reference, but you should shop wherever you are most comfortable.

    Jeff

Our budget is ZERO!!! We have to make do with second hand equipment. Our PCs are Pentium II and Pentium III, running at speeds between 200 MHz and 500 MHz. We have been able to tap into MS academic licensing - a REAL HELP. If we had $3000, I'd love to give our staff decent desk tops running at 1.5-2.5 MHz. We use a 500 MHz PC with WinXP as network server. A real poor man's option.

We use POP3 email accounts provided by an ISP. We would like simply to store the outlook files on the server rather than individual workstations. And then I would like to share the address book between staff.

Can we do this with OE or outlook 2000?

    I guess if it were easy, you wouldn't be asking. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Since you're willing to use Outlook 2000, take a look at this thread for some more ideas.
