Unable to remove spyware from PC

    Hi,

I have installed some spyware software but am unable to click on "My Computer ". It appears to do nothing when l click on it.

Also l am unable to change the home page after installing various spyware software.

I am assuming the registry has been affected in some way. Therefore the only solution is to re-format the hard drive.
    Is there an alternative solution?

Can you tell us WHAT software you're talking about? Perhaps you meant to say "spyware detection software" rather than spyware software - I hope.

I sure wouldn't jump to a reformat this quickly. You didn't answer the question of WHAT software you installed. While we're at it, what OS and have you tried RUNNING the spyware detection software? It's possible you've got a nastie in there somewhere. I hope you have a virus detector program running also - do you? Don't be shy, details are good!

Re: Unable to remove spyware from PC

I am tried to install AVG Anti-Virus but am unable to due to PC telling me it is already installed.
There is file in the regsitry which l am very hesitate to delete this is the reason l cannot re-install AVG.
Probably also due to PC being hijacked.

I have spyblaster and spybot installed. I have run both these programs but still the home page is hijacked and l am unable to click on explorer and My Computer.
I know l have a nastie in there but have run out of ideas as to how to eradicate the problem.
    I have Windows 98 installed.
Any suggestions as to what else l could try?

Re: Unable to remove spyware from PC

You say you PC has been Hijacked. What symptoms other than not being able to click on My computer and Explorer (is that Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer) ??? Can you access the internet and do you have control of your browser once online. Has your homepage been changed. Have you updated Spybot recently ?? All this information will be important for us to help you determine the problem and attempt to correct it.

Telling us "There is a file in the registry which l am very hesitate to delete this is the reason l cannot re-install AVG." is not useful. We need the name of the file and the location in the registry. We are more than happy to help, or at least try to, but you have to help us help you. Please be more specific. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Re: Unable to remove spyware from PC

    Windows Explorer has been hijacked.
I can access the interent and yes l do have control of the browser when l am on-line.
    I have updated spybot recently.

I don't the name of the file in registry with regards to AVG,l cannot file the location of the file as l don't know where exactly it is.
The reason l say there is a file in the registry is that this was pointed out to me in a previous post.

Spybot came up with some suspect files in the registry, which l am hestitate to delele.
This l think might be the cause of the problem.

Re: Unable to remove spyware from PC

You ought to let the spyware removal software do its job and clean up what it finds! That's far better than resorting to a wipe out and clean install. You may have to do that anyway, if all this talk of hijacks, spyware etc. has your OS too corrupted to be salvaged. By the way, is this the same machine on which you've been having the "beeping" problem discussed in another post? If that's the case, you really ought to try to solve that problem FIRST, since, if it's hardware related it could be causing all kinds of odd behaviour. We could all be chasing our tails trying to find a problem that doesn't exist. One step at a time....

Re: Unable to remove spyware from PC

This is a different machine to the one with the beeping sound.
That problem has now been resolved.

I ran spyware but it appeared to make no difference.
The OS appears to be ok.
    Any suggestions?

Re: Unable to remove spyware from PC

OK. There is a newly announced vulnerability that COULD allow Windows Explorer to be hijacked, but I doubt that this is your problem.

Since it appears that your trouble began with the installation of AVG, then my first suggestion would be to uninstall AVG or whatever pieces of it are on your system. Check to see if it has it's own uninstall utility in the Start>Programs>AVG (or whatever it's parent folder is) folder. If none exists, go to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it from there. Once it's gone, that alone may solve the issue. If not, post back and we can check into other options. If it does, then try installing AVG again. This all might be the result of an installation gone bad.

Check the download link and instructions for Hijack This in <!post=this post,296439>this post<!/post>. Maybe it will help as it will list many registry entries that the "experts" (remember the instructions mentioned above) can comment on.

    Have a Great day!!!

Sheesh, this is getting like a tooth extraction - a little at a time!

You said above that you were reluctant to allow Spybot to delete anything. Did you or didn't you?

Maybe you were right and you just ought to do a format and re-install and be done with it.

Yes - follow the two posts just above, from two different " Docs " ... or take it to a repair shop and have them look at it.
