How to Restore Internet Explorer Icon? (XP SP-1)

Something happened and I no longer have an Internet Explorer Icon.

How do I restore it?

Thanks, John

Right-click an empty part of the desktop.
Select Properties from the popup menu.
Activate the Desktop tab.
Click Customize Desktop...
Tick the Internet Explorer check box.
Click OK.

You have created a standard shortcut. That will work fine to start IE, but it is not the 'special' icon you originally had. Right-clicking your shortcut and selecting Properties will display the properties of the shortcut, while the same for the special icon will let you edit Internet Options. Perhaps TweakUI can restore the special icon.

I don't know why www.google.com won't work, others will no doubt be able to help you with that.

Since you can not get Google to open, can you get any other page to open?

Has AOL made any changes that wants you to use ONLY AOL as your search engine?
Is AOL BLOCKED in the security section of Internet options?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Hi Hans, this worked for me. Have no idea where my IE icon went, but it disappeared after one of the recent critical updates were installed, had not worried about chasing it till I saw this post. Thanks very much. :-)

I'm glad it helped you, even if it didn't work for the original poster!

Hi John:
Can you go to Control Panel/Internet Options/Advanced tab & check "Show Internet Explorer on the Desktop"? If it's already toggled on, uncheck it & click OK. Then go back & recheck it.

It's missing in my options as well Phil. And I also see one in mine that isn't displayed in yours - "Enable visual styles on buttons and controls in web pages". It's right below "Enable third-party browser extensions".

Hmmm. I have IE 6.0.2800.1106CO SP-1, with all the critical updates. I have Win 98SE, but I didn't think the OS mattered.

From memory, the option was removed in WinXP. I think it may have been one of those subtle moves that coincidentally happened around the time that the Court Case was taking place. As a lawyer, can you advise us whether that could have been a real - or just a purported - coincidence?
