Re: Outlook 2K Contacts slowness... (2000)

That's a huge number of contacts. I'd try these steps in this order:

    1. run 'scanpst.exe' on the PSt containing the contacts

    if that doesn't help try

    2. back them up to an archive then export the contacts to Excel, delete them all, compress the PST then reimport them from Excel. don't forget to back up first.

    3. place the contacts in a completely separate PST and keep it open at all times.

John, thx for the reply. I failed to mention that we use Exchange 2000 and all of his contacts are stored on the Exchange server. Anything .pst related won't help. Any other ideas?

    Outlook 2K Contacts slowness... (2000)

I have a user with over 3000 contacts in his Contacts folder in Outlook 2000 (we use Exchange 2000 and he can't use a .pst for his contacts because he needs to sync them with his Palm Pilot). He adds to this weekly so eventually it will hit 4000, than 5000, etc. He has to do this, there's no way around it. He's our non-profit org's shmoozer, hence the number of contacts.

His time to open a contact in his Contacts folder has increased dramatically over time. I have a couple hundred contacts and opening one of them takes a second. When goes to open one of his it takes around 10 seconds. It's very annoying because he accesses this list constantly. He sync's his Outlook stuff with a Palm and has told me that he can find a contact on his Palm faster than he can open it in Outlook.

I've looked for something telling me what to do about this but haven't found anything yet. I'm wondering if it's time to move him to a different program for managing his contacts. I'm not sure we're to that point yet. Do you guys have any ideas on what's wrong and how to fix it? It would be ideal if he could just stick with Outlook.

If the user has a PST, they are likely stored in it and are where he's pulling Contacts from, even though they appear as a server side folder. If he doesn't have a PST, I'm surprised you would want to store that much info in Exchange (do you mean Exchange 5.5?), and I'm out of ideas (I don't know the server side). Perhaps a separate mailbox for his Contacts? Or perhaps he -should- have a PST? You might want to post a link to this thread in the servers forum if the user doesn't have a PST.

Re: Outlook 2K Contacts slowness... (2000)

He definitely doesn't have a .pst for his main mailbox. He might have a .pst for "backup" purposes, but his Palm pulls the info from his Contacts folder on the Exchange 2000 server. The size of his Contacts folder only comes out to 1557K. That's a meg and a half, right? It doesn't appear to be that big. On another note, I have opened his mailbox in my Outlook and played around in his Contacts folder. It seems to be working fine for me. Doesn't that mean it has something to do with his PC or network connection?

    Maybe he can shmooze himself up a new computer. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

I agree, if it works fine on your computer, you should suspect something on his. If not on the computer itself, in the network interface, including the NIC, cable, and switch port. As these things keep getting cheaper and more disposable, the quality seems to be falling, although sometimes just turning them off and on (or removing the power cord and plugging it back in) seems to help.

His Contacts folder is 1.5 GIG not Meg. Are your PC and his relatively the same hardware? Same CPU, memory, NIC, OS etc.?

I would check out two things. First, make sure his connection to the exchange server is optimized. Next, look up the outlook command-line switches. maybe /cleanviews or something like that would help.
I'm sorry, I don't have any direct links, but a little searching through MS's knowledgebase will get that.

I wouldn't think that Exchange would have a problem with a few thousand items in a mailbox, however, on the other hand, if he really has a need to manipluate lots and lots of contacts, I would check into a specialized program.
