Error opening Word file from My Computer

Using Word 2000 on Windows 2000; when I attempt to open a Word file by doubleclicking (or right-clicking and choosing "Open") directly from My Computer I get an error (looks like a system error) that says the filename cannot be found. This does not occur with any other Office app.
I thought I'd be clever and check the "open action" associated with the file type, but that takes me into DDE territory and that's a foreign country to me.

Attached is a file with screen shots documenting the above. Any ideas?

    Hi schatzie,

It does sound like a broken file association. I have found if you manually edit the file type and even if everything looks correct, there may still an error in the Registry.

The best way to recreate the file association is to let Word do it. That can be easily accomplished with the following:

Go to Start/Run and run this command:

    winword /r

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.

Thanks. I tried the /r switch but it didn't help, still get the same error. That led me to try other switches. When I used the /a switch the error goes away. Unfortunately, this leads me to believe that one of my global templates may be at fault, although which one and why, I don't know. If I figure this out, I'll let you know.

Answer -- global template from add-in product is causing the error. NOW they tell me it's a known issue!! <img src=/S/scream.gif border=0 alt=scream width=15 height=15>

Thanks, anyway. I'm waiting for the next patch.
