Gremlins are playing with Word (Word 97)

I've been working on a set of documents that someone else created (with no template) It's more or less one large table all ranging from 4-16 pages long. I'm a keyboard shortcut gal... a few days ago I noticed that when I tried to change a style using CRTL+SHIFT+S it took an AWFUL long time to actually get the style box highlighted... That was annoying but not enough for me to drop everything and fix it as it only happened with these few documents...

I then tried to create an actual template for this project. I was copying something from one of the original documents to put it in the new template but as I copied it, Word froze. I closed the program and even rebooted just to appease the computer gods. Now, I find that whenever I open Word it starts with Document 2. To me, this meant that something else was open. I deleted all my temp files and even rebuilt the normal template. It still happens. What else can I do to get rid of these gremlins?
Thanks

I assume that you have SR-1 and SR-2 installed. What happens if you open this doc with a later version of Word?

Also check for temporary files in the folder that contains your Word templates, and in the folders that contain loaded add-ins (if any).

And there is Phil Rabichow's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000),197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000)<!/post>, of course.

redbeard... right, sorry... I do have SR-1 and 2. And a later version of Word is not an option. I also know it was created in Word 97.
Hans... it's funny, I was just coming in here to edit my post to include that I had tried Phil's post...
I'm still playing so I'll let you know if anything works. Thanks.

Re: Gremlins are playing with Word (Word 97)

Hi K.T.:
I've had Word start with Document 2 (or greater) after a crash. Usually, but not always, I can Ctrl+Alt+Del & find that more than one instance of Winword is running. However, usually a reboot fixes it. In addition to removing all temp files & rebooting, I'd check to see what's running at startup. I've had Word start with Document 2 when a browser web page starting with Word, so make sure nothing is running except Explorer, systray, & your anti-virus. I'd also check any *.asd files (auto recovery files) & delete these.
Hope this helps,

Phil... I tried it... no asd files and as for the startup stuff... I'm fairly certain it looks normal (though the good lord knows with our IT dept.)

Marginal news though... I think I figured out the factor that's making the shortcut key sluggish. The documents as well as the new template I'm working on is set to landscape. Could this be the cause of the problem? If so, that stinks... yet still eases my mind that it's not anything really corrupted.

This document 2 thing is still freaking me out though, so any other suggestions are more than welcome.
Thanks

....and then I heard a choir of angels... I guess the fourth reboot is the charm... I have finally opened Word to Document1!! Alas, I have no idea what did it...
Thank you all for helping out with my problem... and if you can figure out how to give the shortcut key a little more pep in landscape documents I would be much obliged!
Thank you

Hi KT:
Glad it's sorted out. I don't know why the shortcut key is giving you problems, but I don't think it's because the document is landscape. Ctrl+Shift+S should work reasonably quickly. Perhaps there is some document corruption, especially with styles. Make a copy of the doc, save it as an RTF file, then back to a Word doc. Perhaps there is an errant style that is causing the delay.
Cheers,
