Windows can't find error messages (Win XP SP1)

Recently when clicking on a desktop shortcut I'm seeing the message that Windows can't find the page requested. For instance I clicked on the shortcut for my Online Banking program and this was seen just before the requested page loaded.

Windows cannot find "https://www.commerceonline banking.com/". Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

I've searched the MKB and here for help but found nothing. It's driving me nuts. Even the shortcut for Google returns the same message and then loads Goggle.com. These are the ones on my desktop, not the ones on the Quick Launch Toolbar. I haven't tried making new ones yet, that's my first inclination.

Will some kind soul advise me of how to fix this annoyance?

Right-click your shortcut and from pop-up menu choose Properties.
In URL box change the address as follows:

    https://www.commerceonlinebanking.com

Click Apply, OK. I hope it will fix your shortcut.

You're a genuis. It worked like a charm. But I can't figure out how it was fixed. I typed the same name that was there previously, except fot the / at the end of the address. Was it just the retyping or removing the/? I'm eaten up with curiosity, please explain.

Thanks for fix, I'll try it with the other shortcuts, like Google.

I seem to have spoken to soon. The fix worked with my bank, but doesn't with Google. I wrote them on Saturday and waiting for a reply, perhaps on Monday. I will return and post what I learn if there is a fix suggested.

You have double/triple checked the Google shortcut target, right? Have you run trojan scan - Ad-aware & Spybot? See <!post=Ken's starpost,296439>Ken's starpost<!/post> for detailed information and links on software to use.

Yes Joe, I've run the lastes versions of Spyware Blaster; Spybot's Search & Destroy (advanced mode); and Ad-aware (advance mode). I use WinPatrol to protect me from being hy-jacked, I can't change my home page without Win Patrol's asking if I changed it or not. I run them all at least once a week and used them this past Wednesday.

I viisted Ken's starpost which is very good for someone what does not have enough protection. I thank you for sharing his post). No problem I've ever had was a easy thing to fix, I must be snake bit.

Post the path that you have in the Google shortcut, so we can see where you are telling IE to go.

What happens when you "type" the address in the address pane?

What happens when you "paste" the address in the address pane , copied from the link?

Re: Windows can't find error messages (Win XP SP1)

When I typed in the address for Google in Firefox, Google Search page appeared with no problems. The same occurred when I copied and pasted the address into Outlook Express. I sent the link to myself in an e-mail. No problems with either way.

What happens if you define a new shortcut?

If you mean by define, making a new shortcut, I tried that & it failed. Now I find that Google's not the only one that makes the message appear. I think I mentioned Online Banking as another link that generates the Can't find message.
